Abstract
Data provided is associated with an article in the Journal of Applied Entomology on the lethal effects of the wild potato species Solanum bulbocastanum to a bacteria-transmitting insect vector (Pentastiridius leporinus) in potato and other crops. This data set includes data derived from two no-choice mortality trials and from choice trials with the insects on the wild potato vs. the cultivated potato. Raw data obtained from GC/MS analysis of collected volatile organic compounds of both plant species (wild potato and potato) are provided as well. Also, peak area values from LC/MS metabolite profiling of whole insects of the mortality trial, as well as insect gut extracts obtained from a plant sap feeding assay, are made available.

Data files
- coxph_data.xlsx: data of two no-choice mortality trials. Sheet "surv_exp1" contains data of the first mortality trial, sheet "surv_exp2" contains data of the second one. Dead specimens of adult Pentastiridius leporinus exposed to pots with Solanum bulbocastanum or to Solanum tuberosum cv ‘Gala’ were counted on a daily basis during the experiments; column descriptions as follows: ‘indiv’: dead individuals of P. leporinus in chronological order; ‘futime’: day of experiment in chronological order (exp1 started on 24 June 2024; exp2 on 15 July 2024); ‘fustat’: 1 indicates that the individual was taking part in the study, whereas 0 indicates that it was censored; ‘rx’ indicates the treatment with 1 for S. bulbocastanum and 2 for S. tuberosum cv ‘Gala’; ‘pot’ indicates the number of the pot. The column 'sex' contains f for female adults, and m for male adults of P. leporinus. The sheet "notes" contains column descriptions for ease of use.
- R_Survival_analysis.txt: R code for the statistical survival analysis, with "coxph_data.xlsx" as data basis.
- choice_wide.xlsx: count data of adults of Pentastiridius leporinus exposed to Solanum tuberosum cv ‘Gala’ and Solanum bulbocastanum in a dual-choice experiment (starting dates 5 & 10 July 2024). Column descriptions are as follows:'cage': c1 to c6 indicate cages of choice-experiment I and II (same cages);'batch': exp1= choice experiment I; exp2= choice experiment II;'timing’: t1 to t6 indicate observation timings of ½ h, 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 24 h and 48 h;'position_p1':indicated as 'left' or 'right' of S. bulbocastanum plants, view from the entrance of the cage; 'p1': observed planthoppers on S. bulbocastanum; 'p2': observed planthoppers on S. tuberosum cv 'Gala'; 'elsewhere': number of non-decisive planthoppers at the respective observation timing (dead specimens excluded). Column descriptions are also provided in the sheet "notes" for ease of use.
- R_Choice_betabinomial_glmm.txt: R code for statistical analysis of the two choice experiments, with "choice_wide.xlsx" as data basis.
- GCMS_Therhaag_et_al.zip: raw data from GC/MS analysis of volatile organic compounds collected from six samples of Solanum bulbocastanum (et_014.raw to et_019.raw) and Solanum tuberosum cv ‘Gala’ (et_021.raw to et_026.raw) on 30 July 2024. This data type (.raw) is not proprietary and can be opened with AMDIS (Automated Mass Spectrometry Deconvolution and Identification System), a freely available software for GC-MS data interpretation developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce. Annotated and identified compounds are provided in a supplement to the article.
- data_voc.xlsx: sheet "compounds" lists peak area values of compounds obtained after GC/MS analysis of the volatile profiles of Solanum bulbocastanum and Solanum tuberosum cv 'Gala'(data of "GCMS_Therhaag_et_al.zip"). Names (column 'compound') and retention indices (column 'RI) from the numbered compounds (column 'no') are listed in the sheet "table", additional information is provided in the supplement to the article.
