Abstract
Dataset on the impacts of repeated high severity fire on soil biogeochemistry. Soil sample (0-5 cm) measurements include bulk soil carbon and nitrogen concentration, carbon dioxide efflux (from laboratory incubation), inorganic nitrogen concentrations and fluxes, and soil carbon and nitrogen in mineral-associated and particulate organic matter.

Description of the data and file structure
Soils were collected (0-5 cm) from sites at differing stages of recovery from a first or second high severity fire for varied laboratory analyses.
Files and variables
File: bulksoildata.csv
Description: Data from bulk soil samples.
Variables
- Sample ID: The site name followed by the field replicate number. Site names describe the year the site was burned. Sites recovering from one fire are labeled as 2007, 2019, or 2021. Sites recovering from two fires are labeled as 0719 (burned in 2007 and 2019) or 0721 (burned in 2007 and 2021). The "unburned" site (100+ years since last fire) is labeled as UB. There were six field replicates per site.
- SampleWeight_mg: Sample weight (mg).
- gCperg: Grams of carbon per gram of soil.
- gNperg: Grams of nitrogen per gram of soil.
- percentC: Soil carbon concentration (%).
- percentN: Soil nitrogen concentration (%).
- cumulativeCO2: Cumulative carbon dioxide efflux from incubations (grams of carbon per gram of soil per hour).
- NH4pre: Soil ammonium concentration at incubation start (grams of nitrogen per kilogram of soil).
- NO3pre: Soil nitrate concentration at incubation start (grams of nitrogen per kilogram of soil).
- NH4post: Soil ammonium concentration at incubation end (grams of nitrogen per kilogram of soil).
- NO3post: Soil nitrate concentration at incubation end (grams of nitrogen per kilogram of soil).
- netNH4: Net change in soil ammonium over the incubation.
- netNO3: Net change in soil nitrate over the incubation.

Description: Data from the soil size fractions.
Variables

Sites recovering from one fire are labeled as 2007, 2019, or 2021. Sites recovering from two fires are labeled as 0719 (burned in 2007 and 2019) or 0721 (burned in 2007 and 2021). - SampleWeight_mg: Sample weight (mg).
- percentN: Grams of nitrogen per gram of soil.
- percentC: Grams of carbon per gram of soil.
- gFracgsoil: Grams of soil fraction per gram of soil.
- gCpergfrac: Grams of carbon per gram of soil fraction.
- gNpergfrac: Grams of nitrogen per gram of soil fraction.
- CNratio: Carbon:nitrogen ratio. There is one NA value where CNratio was not calculated due to an outlying percentN value for the sample.

Data can be viewed in any software capable of opening csv files.
