Abstract
Current observations of global tree mortality associated with drought raise concerns about climate change risks to forests’ dynamics and function. Yet it is unclear which forests are more susceptible to mortality under changing climates. We examined whether tree mortality related to hotter droughts is predominantly occurring in edge or core populations and assessed whether mortality patterns in niche space are consistent with species’ drought tolerances.

Description of the data and file structure
Aim: We examined whether tree mortality related to hot-drought is predominantly occurring in niche edge or niche core populations and assessed whether mortality patterns in niche space are consistent with species drought tolerance.
Methods: We estimated species climatic niche based on global occurrences and annual time series of climate and compared it with a null model of random distribution of tree mortality. We assessed how loss of xylem conductance and hydraulic safety margin relate to position in niche space (marginality-centrality) and to the degree of climate anomaly during mortality.
Files and variables
File: Species_Conservation_Status_IUCN.pdf
Description: Conservation status of the species included in the drought-mortality analysis. Note that for all species with a conservation status within Conservation concern, Endangered, Near Threatened, and Vulnerable (highlighted in red) the coordinates of the mortality sites in the xysp.RData file have been generalized and are provided with a precision of 0.1 decimal degrees for Near Threatened and Vulnerable species, and rounded to 1 degree for Conservation concern and Endangered species.
File: xysp.RData
Description: Coordinates (longitude and latitude), Species, and Mortality year of the tree mortality dataset used in the analyses
