Description

This dataset contains long‑term monitoring records from ecological restoration trials implemented by the Galapagos Verde 2050 (GV2050) program at Special Services Sites (SSS: quarries, former waste dumps) in the Galápagos Archipelago, Ecuador. It includes repeated measurements of planted individuals under different restoration treatments to evaluate survival, growth, and treatment effectiveness in arid environments.

• Geographic coverage: Galápagos Islands — sites on Baltra, Floreana, San Cristóbal; example sites include Antiguo basurero, Botadero de basura, Mina Granillo Negro, Mirador Cerro Colorado.

Variables (dictionary)

Below are the columns included in the Dryad CSV. Units and allowed values are provided where applicable.

• Sitio.específico: Planting/monitoring site name within each island.
• Species: Scientific name of the recorded species (as observed in the field list).
• Tratamiento: Restoration treatment applied to the individual (e.g., Cocoon, Waterboxx®, Hydrogel, Control).
• Código: Unique identifier of the planted individual.
• ID.Monitoreo: Unique identifier of the monitoring event/visit.
• Fecha: Monitoring date (dd-mm-yyyy).
• Personal: Name/initials of the field personnel who recorded the data.
• Código.control: Code of the control or plot identifier used in the trial.
• Altura: Plant height at the monitoring date (cm).
• Crecimiento: Increment in height since previous visit (cm).
• Tasa.de.crecimiento: Absolute growth rate (per day).
• Tasa.de.crecimiento.acumulada: Cumulative absolute growth rate (same units as the previous variable).
• Frutos: Fruit count recorded at the visit (integer; 0 if none).
• Zona: Ecological zone classification used locally (e.g., Arid, Humid).
• Familia: Taxonomic family.
• Genero: Taxonomic genus.
• Especie: Specific epithet.
• Nombre.común: Local common name.
• Isla: Island within the archipelago (e.g., San Cristóbal, Baltra, Floreana).
• Sustrato: Dominant substrate/soil at the planting site.
• Altitud: Elevation above sea level (m).
• Proyecto: Project umbrella name.
• Subproyecto: Subproject label used in internal tracking.
• PlantingDate: Planting date (dd-mm-yyyy).
• Days: Number of days since planting at the time of monitoring.
• Survival: Survival status at the visit (1 = alive; 0 = dead).
• count: Total individuals planted for the corresponding grouping (see manuscript).
• SurvivalSum: Cumulative survivors for the corresponding grouping (see manuscript).

Note on excluded fields: The following columns were intentionally removed from the Dryad release to protect sensitive locations and simplify the dataset: Latitud, Longitud, Diámetro, Herviboría, Estado, Nuevas.hojas, Flores.

Methods

• Design: Field experiments in Special Services Sites applying restoration tools (e.g., water‑saving devices, soil amendments, mulching) and controls. Individuals were monitored repeatedly.
• Measurements: Height, growth increments, phenology (fruits), condition notes, and survival status recorded at each visit. Planting water and planting date were registered.
• Quality control: Consistency checks for species names and categorical codes; repair/removal of malformed coordinates; export as plain CSV with UTF‑8 encoding.

Usage notes

• Derived variables (rates, cumulative growth, days since planting) depend on visit intervals; verify definitions here and in the manuscript.
• Species names follow local checklist usage; check synonyms for meta‑analyses.
• Coordinates were removed from the public file; contact the authors for generalized locations if required for conservation‑sensitive reuse.
