Abstract
The data is for the purpose of testing the covariation of plant root strategy and microbial community. It contains data on in situ root exudation, root chemical and morphological traits across 15 tree species in a tropical common garden in southwestern China. We further performed analyses on phospholipid fatty acid and high-throughput amplicon sequencing to estimate the fungal-to-bacterial ratio and diversity of bacterial community in the soils corresponding to target trees. There are three data files in this dataset. One is the "bacterial communities OTU.csv", which contains the original OTU data of bacteria across the 3 replicates of 15 tree species. The "bacterial_abundance(Phylum)&tree_species.csv" file contains the annotated bacterial Phylum of 3 replicates of 15 target tree species. The "root_traitsµbial_biomass&bacterial_diversity.xlsx" file contains the fine-root traits, Total PLFA, fungal-to-bacterial ratio, bacterial stress, and bacterial diversity data of 15 tree species with 3 replicates.

Description of the data and file structure
We measured root exudation and other chemical and morphological fine-root traits across 15 tree species in a tropical common garden in southwestern China. We used phospholipid fatty acid analysis and high-throughput amplicon sequencing to estimate the fungal-to-bacterial ratio and diversity of the bacterial community in the soils corresponding to target trees.
In the data files, the "microbial_abundance (PCoA).xlsx" contains the microbial abundance data of 15 tree species with 3 replicates, which can be used for Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) and Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA). The "root traits and bacterial communities OTU (Mantel test).csv" contains the fine-root traits and bacterial abundance data of 15 tree species with 3 replicates, which can be used for the Mantel test. The "bacterial_abundance(Phylum)&tree_species.csv" contains the bacterial abundance data (Phylum) of 15 tree species with 3 replicates, which can be used for Redundancy Analysis (RDA). The "root_traitsµbial_biomass&bacterial_diversity.xlsx" contains the fine-root traits, Total PLFA, fungal-to-bacterial ratio, bacterial stress, and bacterial diversity data of 15 tree species with 3 replicates, which can be used for the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and standardized major axis regression model.
