Description Data are measurements of maximum stress before breakage, toughness, modulus of material stiffness, and strain at breakage for kelp blades of three different species (Laminaria digitata, Saccharina latissima, and Laminaria complanata) with different types of blade damage. Blade damage type is indicated in the Sample Type column. Excavations refer to partial thickness grazing scars in blades created by Lacuna vincta, holes refer to full thickness grazing holes in blades created by Lacuna vincta, MM refers to blades covered with Membranipora membranacea, but with no visible degradation, and MM lesion refers to blades covered by Membranipora membranacea with visible degradation. Undamaged samples were controls.
