Abstract
Our study describes spring migratory movements and home ranges during the nesting period for four dark morphs captured in the Great Lakes region of North America contextualized against movements during the nesting period for 22 light morph individuals belonging to the subspecies B. j. abieticola. Our results indicate that these dark types nested in eastern Canada and belong to the same geographic breeding population as the light individuals, extending the distribution of plumage polymorphism in the species approximately 1500 km into eastern Canada.

This work presents spring migration routes for four dark morph red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and assesses home range size during an 80-day nesting period for 24 (4 dark and 22 light) individuals in boreal Canada during the summer months. In addition, this also includes comparisons between home ranges of sexes and age classes. This README includes code for analyses and data presentation in figures 1 and 2 of the manuscript, including home range analyses and mean home range size comparisons. All code is available in R file Robinson_2024_JBI.R, and uses the following data files - all_nesting.csv, hr.csv, spring_migration.csv, nesting_locs.csv.
The files all_nesting.csv were used in home range analyses.
The files spring_migration.csv and nesting_locs.csv were used in creating figure 1.
The data in hr.csv, using variables sex, age, morph, and 95% AKDE were used in creating figure 2.
Itemized instruction for the use of each data file, and the respective variables is outlined in the R script.
