Round bamboo has aroused much interest in construction for its unique structural and mechanical proporties, but poor biological durability seriously restricts its application. In this paper, copper naphthenate (CuN) was used as a preservative to prevent round bamboo from decaying and mildewing. To achieve good penetration under normal pressure, the heat-cold procedure was adopted. The retention and fixation of copper were determined as 0.39 kg/m3 and 85.3%, respectively. CuN was distributed uniformly along the axial direction of bamboo, partially filling the intercellular space and pits. SEM-EDX further disclosed an increasing trend in the composition of CuN from the end inward. XPS and FTIR analyses later revealed that CuN could be fixed on bamboo in the form of hydrogen bond or complex reaction, It was observed that decay resistance of CuN treated bamboo against T.versicolor and G.trabeum increased by 23.1~37.5% and 29.5~36.3% respectively in comparison with the untreated bamboo. Meanwhile, the treated bamboo possessed enhanced mold resitance, particularly, when the concentration of treating solution increased to 0.8 wt.%, the resisting efficacy soaring as high as 85.9%, 94.8% and 70.3% for A.niger, P.citrinum and T.viride respectively. Consequently, the heat-cold impregnation of CuN is a feasible method for bamboo treatment.
