THIRTY-SIX CONSECUTIVE MONTHS OF BIRD POINT COUNT DATA FROM TWENTY COUNT SITES IN A MEXICAN WETLAND Journal: Ibis, international journal of avian science Manuscript number: IBIS-2021-SC-012 Manuscript title: Guild-level response to Hurricane Carlotta among birds in a Mexican Wetland Data author: Mateo D.M. Ruiz Author email: truiz@ecosur.edu.mx Author affiliation: Department of Biodiversity Conservation, El Colegio de la Frontera Sur, Carretera Panamericana y Periférico Sur s/n. Barrio de María Auxiliadora, 29290 San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico Orcid iD: 0000-0003-2991-6576 Abstract: This data comprises point count abundance values for birds recorded over 36 consecutive months at 20 point count sites in a coastal lagoon in Oaxaca, southwest Mexico (15°49'26"N–56 96°34'53"W). 24 months of point counts were done prior to Hurricane Carlotta (June 2010 to May 2012) and 12 months post-hurricane (June 2012 to May 2013). Usage notes: Column headers are bird species names following AOU nomenclature Row 2 contains a grouping variable for trophic guilds taken from Ruiz et al 2017, using the following abbreviation: a1: Aquatic plant-consumers t1: Terrestrial plant-consumers a2: Aquatic insectivores t2: Terrestrial insectivores a2.5: Aquatic secondary consumers a3: Piscivores t3: Carnivores Row names give the month, year, count site and study year (i.e., year 1, year 2, or year 3). Count sites containing the letters 'a' to 'c' are in mature mangrove forest and count sites containing the letters 'd' to 'f' are in unwooded marsh. Each data cell corresponds to the number of individuals of a given species recorded during one 10 minute point count with a 25 m fixed radius. Keyword: hurricane, bird guilds, point count, mangrove, community composition, turnover Methods: Birds were identified by sight and/or by their vocalizations, with the aid of binoculars and field guides. Sites were accessed on foot or by paddle boat, during the first two hours of daylight. Funding Information: The Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología of Mexico funded the acquisition of this data (grant holder 222996). Related works: Ruiz Bruce Taylor, M.D.M., J.L.
