Readme txt for the Dryad data package for the manuscript "Lifetime inbreeding depression, purging, and mating system evolution in a simultaneous hermaphrodite tapeworm" Each row in file "Purging_full_dryad.csv" represents a copepod exposed to tapeworm larvae. Explanations of the column variables are listed below. id - Individual identifier for each row in the dataframe dam - The mother of an individual, corresponding to a value in the "id" column sire - The father of an individual, corresponding to a value in the "id" column Mat.match - The tapeworm study organism is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. In generation 0, the worms bred in pairs were not separated, so we cannot identify the mother or father of a particular offspring. In G1 and G2, worms were separated after being bred together for two days. Usually, the two parents could be distinguished with microsatellite markers, so that the mother could be identified. This did not work in all cases, though. Thus, each individual in the pedigree is coded as having a clear maternal identity (0), a likely maternal identity (1), or a maternal identity is randomized between the two possible parents (2). Gen - Generation of the experiment, corresponding to G0, G1, and G2 in the manuscript cop.ID - Individual id for each copepod used in the experiment Spatio - Spatiotemporal group/block of copepods. The first number is the generation, and the second and third numbers are the infection round and group Family - The experiment was started with 14 full-sib parasite families, and they are coded by this variable. Triplet - Full-sib families were paired to create comparable 'triplet' groups (see Fig. 1 in manuscript) IB - Six inbred treatment groups: outcrossing in G0 (0-OC), outcrossing in G1 (1-OC), selfing in G1 (1-S), outcrossing in G2 (2-OC), selfing in G2 (2-S), twice selfed in G2 (2-S-S). IB2 - Outcrossed (OC), once-selfed (S) or twice-selfed (S-S) C.exposure - The number of coracidia to which the copepod was exposed (2 in G0, 1 in G1 and G2) C.intensity - Number of worms infecting the copepod Cerc - The presence (1) or absence (0) of a cercomer 9 days post exposure Cop.length - Length of the copepod in mm from eye to the end of the cephalothorax Proc - The area of procercoids (um^2) measured in copepods in vivo 13 days post exposure Failed.devo - Worms that did not have a cercomer or calcareous corpuscles 13 days post exposure were scored as having developmental defects (1) Ini.F.TL - Stickleback total length in mm shortly before exposure Ini.F.W - Stickleback weight in g shortly before exposure Tank - Codes the tank in which a fish was maintained Date.exposed - Date on which a fish was given an infected copepod Date.dissected - Date on which a fish was dissected Age.diss - Age of the infection in days on the dissection date Fin.F.TL - Final fish length in mm at dissection Fin.F.W - Final fish weight in g at dissection F.surv - Whether a fish was alive (0) or dead (1) when it was dissected; some fish died before the planned dissection date F.inf - Whether a fish was infected (1) or not (0) Pler.W - Weight of the plerocercoid in mg F.sex - male (0) or female (1) stickleback Breeder - Whether a worm was used for breeding (1) Eggs - The number of eggs produced by a worm. This was only assessed for worms bred alone. Eggs.checked.HR - For clutches produced by selfing, the number of eggs checked for hatching. Hatched - The number of hatched eggs Unhatched - The number of unhatched eggs IB - inbred treatment group: outcrossing in G1 (1-OC), selfing in G1 (1-S), outcrossing in G2 (2-OC), selfing in G2 (2-S), twice selfed in G2 (2-S-S). IB2 - Outcrossed (OC), once-selfed (S) or twice-selfed (S-S) Eggs.checked.HR - The number of eggs checked for hatching in each clutch. Hatched - The number of hatched eggs Unhatched - The number of unhatched eggs Any questions should be addressed to Dan Benesh (daniel.benesh@lifesci.ucsb.edu)
