Attraction to and learning from social cues in fruit fly larvae Zachary Durisko & Reuven Dukas The data files archived here are sorted by Experiment corresponding to the order presented in the published paper. The authors request to be contacted prior to the use of these data in order to provide further information. EXPERIMENT 1. Experiments A through E are sorted on separate spreadsheets. 1A SIDE MODELS refers to the side of the food containing models during the test. CHOICE refers to the food first contacted by focals during the test. "Social" indicates the food containing models, "Solitary" indicates the food without models. "Center" indicates no choice within 5 minutes (omitted from analysis). TIME TO CHOICE refers to the latency for a focal to make contact with their chosen food disk. 1B Same as above, though also including ORDER_TESTED as an indication of the oder with which larvae were tested with the same two stimuli. 1C as above 1D as above TREATMENT refers to the identity of the "social" stimulus, which either contained models for 24 hours (with models still present), had previously contained models but had them removed prior to testing, or the addition of models to fresh food prior to testing. 1E as above, except that CHOICE is defined as either SU "Standard used food" or AU "Artifically used food" EXPERIMENT 2 Excel headings are self explanatory. EXPERIMENT 3 3A Side_50 refers to the location of the 50% food. NUM_LOW and NUM_HUGH refer to the raw number of larvae present on the low and high quality disks after testing. AS_Prop_High refers to the Arcsin squareroot transformed proportion of larvae on the higher quality food. 3B is organized similar to files for Experiment 2. Larvae_yes_or_no refers to whether or not larvae were present on the higher quality food. EXPERIMENT 4 4A is the raw numbers of pupae per dish across time. "Number of Eggs" refers to the density of eggs added to the dish at the start of the experiment. At the bottom of the sheet, the numbers are converted into PROPORTIONS OF EGGS (eg. 5/50 = 0.1). Averages are given beneath this. 4B PROP_Surviving refers to the number of larvae surviving from egg-to-adult. 4C Dry adult weights are sorted into 2 pairs of columns, one for males (left), one for females (right).
