The data set used to build the chronic wasting disease (CWD) risk model. The basis for the data set are mule deer and white-tailed deer harvested by hunters or government sharp-shooters in East-Central Alberta and West-Central Saskatchewan. These deer were tested for CWD. Landscape covariates describe the features surrounding each deer harvested with covariates corresponding to features previously shown to be important for CWD risk and/or deer habitat selection. Details of the columns below: CaseUID -- unique identifier for line of data which corresponds to a deer harvested and tested for CWD Province -- the province, either Alberta or Saskatchewan, where the deer was harvested Harvest -- the method used to harvest the deer, either a hunter or government sharpshooter date_harvested -- the date the deer was harvested, this information was not always provided for deer submitted for testing by hunters year_harvested -- the calendar year when the deer was harvested. time -- when the deer was harvested in years since the first CWD-positive in the study area was harvested (). see bottom for note on sharpshooter deer. easting -- x-axis cartesian coordinate of GPS locations (UTM - NAD83 - Zone 12 North). for CWD-positive deer the last 4 digits are "x" because exact locations are sensitive information. northing -- y-axis cartesian coordinate of GPS locations (UTM - NAD83 - Zone 12 North). for CWD-positive deer the last 4 digits are "x" because exact locations are sensitive information. Species -- the species of the deer harvested, either mule deer or white-tailed deer. Sex -- the sex of the deer harvested, either male or female CWD_Status -- for each deer the head was submitted for CWD testing. if "positive" then disease was detected and if "negative" then it was not detected. e_min -- distance in kilometers to the nearest CWD-positive case detected in previous years within the study area. e_aver -- average distance in kilometers to all CWD-positive case detected in previous years within the study area. Dtown -- distance in kilometers to the nearest community (town, village or hamlet) Driver -- distance in kilometers to the nearest river (Battle/North Saskatchewan/Red Deer) Dstreams -- distance in meters to nearest stream or river. Droad -- distance in meters to the nearest road rugg3 -- the standard deviation in elevation (m) within 3km, a measure of terrain ruggedness. rugg6 -- the standard deviation in elevation (m) within 6km, a measure of terrain ruggedness. rugg12 -- the standard deviation in elevation (m) within 12km, a measure of terrain ruggedness. Road3km -- within 3km radius, the total length of roads in meters. Stream3km -- within 3km radius, the total length of of streams and rivers in meters Pcover3 -- within 3km radius, the proportion of landcover which is forest or shrubs. Pagri3 -- within 3km radius, the proportion of landcover which is agriculture or pasture Pgrass3 -- within 3km radius, the proportion of landcover which is native grass lands. Popen3 -- within 3km radius, the proportion of landcover which is agriculture, pasture or native grassland. Road6km -- within 6km radius, the total length of roads in meters. Stream6km -- within 6km radius, the total length of of streams and rivers in meters Pcover6 -- within 6km radius, the proportion of landcover which is forest or shrubs. Pagri6 -- within 6km radius, the proportion of landcover which is agriculture or pasture Pgrass6 -- within 6km radius, the proportion of landcover which is native grass lands. Popen6 -- within 6km radius, the proportion of landcover which is agriculture, pasture or native grassland. Road12km -- within 12km radius, the total length of roads in meters. Stream12km -- within 12km radius, the total length of of streams and rivers in meters Pcover12 -- within 12km radius, the proportion of landcover which is forest or shrubs. Pagri12 -- within 12km radius, the proportion of landcover which is agriculture or pasture Pgrass12 -- within 12km radius, the proportion of landcover which is native grass lands. Popen12 -- within 12km radius, the proportion of landcover which is agriculture, pasture or native grassland. m_aver -- average landscape resistance (from circuitscape) based on mule deer step selection function to all CWD-positive case detected in previous years within the study area. m_min -- minimum landscape resistance (from circuitscape) based on mule deer step selection function among all CWD-positive case detected in previous years within the study area. w_aver -- average landscape resistance (from circuitscape) based on white-tailed deer step selection function to all CWD-positive case detected in previous years within the study area. w_min -- minimum landscape resistance (from circuitscape) based on white-tailed deer step selection function among all CWD-positive case detected in previous years within the study area. note on time for sharpshooter deer: because the deer harvested by sharpshooters were harvested at the beginning of a calendar year (February/March) and the original CWD-positive within the region and subsquent hunter-harvested deer are harvested at the end of a calendar year (November) there is a slight disconnect between the calendar year harvested and the time since initial detection. To account for this the deer harvested by sharpshooters are given a decimal of 0.27 or 0.33 depending on if they are harvested in February or March respectively. As an example a deer harvested by a sharpshooter in March of 2008 is given a time value of 6.33 instead of 7 despite being killed 7 calendar years since the initial positive in 2001 because it wasn't harvested in the fall it was harvested in the spring of 2008. For the hunter-harvested deer they are mostly harvested in November when the intial positive was taken so we use the difference in calendar year.
