Abstract

This database contains images of 258 individual strawberries with dark background (a setting typically encountered during post-harvest operations). For each strawberry, six images are provided: 1) a color image of the entire strawberry; 2) a color image containing only the calyx of the strawberry; 3) a color image containing only the flesh of the strawberry; 4) a binary image of the entire strawberry; 5) a binary image of the calyx, and 6) a binary image of the flesh.

This database was originally created to evaluate the performance of calyx and flesh extraction algorithms during post-harvest operations.

Methods

The strawberries used in this database were harvested in August 2016 in the region of Salinas, California, U.S.A. Then, they were stored for two days in a temperature-controlled chamber set at +2 degrees Celsius before being used for the images. The image of each strawberry was acquired with a dark contrasting background using a Basler aviator avA1900-50gc camera with a 16mm Fujinon lens. The camera’s exposure time was set at 2 ms. To provide consistent, uniform and adequate lighting, especially given the short exposure time, a set of four lights was installed.

For each strawberry, the image areas corresponding to the calyx and the flesh were extracted manually using the GIMP software and saved as separate color images. Finally, using the obtained images and Matlab software, binary images of the entire fruit, calyx and flesh were created.
