Abstract
This dataset is published by the Geophysical Research Letters (https://doi.org/10.1029/2024GL112853).
The CSV file contains precipitation phase observations (i.e., rain, snow, and mix) and other related meteorological variables (e.g., temperature) from the Mountain Rain or Snow citizen science project. There are 37,338 MRoS observations (i.e., rows) from January 2020 to July 2023 across the conterminous United States.

Description of the data and file structure
Column names and description:
id: Identification number
latitude: Y coordinate of observation reported in decimal degrees rounded to two decimal places (please note: analysis performed using high-resolution geolocation, precision reduced for public dataset)
longitude: X coordinate of observation reported in decimal degrees rounded to two decimal places (please note: analysis performed using high-resolution geolocation, precision reduced for public dataset)
datetime_utc: date and time of observation in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
ecoregions: US EPA Level III ecoregion in which the observation was reported
elevation.m: USGS 10 m digital elevation model from the U.S. Geological Survey in which the observation was reported
temp_air: air temperature (°C) at time and location of observation as computed from multiple ground-based meteorological stations and an inverse distance weighting model corrected for elevation with a time-varying temperature lapse rate
temp_dew: dew point temperature (°C) at time and location of observation as computed from multiple ground-based meteorological stations and an inverse distance weighting model corrected for elevation with a time-varying temperature lapse rate
rh: relative humidity (%) at time and location of observation as computed from multiple ground-based meteorological stations and an inverse distance weighting model corrected for elevation with a time-varying temperature lapse rate
MROS_phase: precipitation phase reported by observer (rain, snow, or mixed)
plp_imerg: the probability of liquid precipitation from the IMERG data
plp_m2: the derived probability of liquid precipitation using the MERRA-2 data
plp_n2: the derived probability of liquid precipitation using the NLDAS-2 data
NA values in this table indicate "not applicable".
