Abstract
Canopy gaps are foundational features of rainforest biodiversity and successional processes. The bais of Central Africa are among the world’s largest natural forest clearings and thought to be critically important islands of open-canopy habitat in an ocean of closed-canopy rainforest. However, while frequently denoted as a conservation priority, there are no published studies on the abundance or distribution of bais across the landscape, nor on their biodiversity patterns, limiting our understanding of their ecological contribution to Congolese rainforests. We combined remote sensing and field surveys to quantify the abundance, spatial distribution, shape, size, biodiversity, and soil properties of bais in Odzala-Kokoua National Park (OKNP), Republic of the Congo (hereafter, Congo). We related bais spatial distribution to variation in hydrology and topography, compared plant community composition and 3D structure between bais and other open ecosystems, quantified animal diversity from camera traps, and measured soil moisture content in different bai types. We found bais to be more numerous than previously thought (we mapped 2,176 bais in OKNP), but their predominantly small size (80.7% of bais were <1ha), highly clustered distribution, and restriction to areas of low topographic position makes them a rare riparian habitat type. We documented low plant community and structural similarity between bais types and with other open ecosystems, and identified significant differences in soil moisture between bai and open ecosystem types. Our results demonstrate that two distinct bais types can be differentiated based on their plant and animal communities, soil properties, and vegetation structure. Taken together, our findings provide insights into how bais relate to other types of forest clearings and on their overall importance to Congolese rainforest ecosystems.

Description of the data and file structure
The data here were collected as part of the publication titled "Spatial ecology, biodiversity, and abiotic determinants of Congo’s bai ecosystem" and can be organized into distinct groups.
Group 1: Species matrix data
There are two files in this category: openecospeciesmatrix.csv and Openecoplotclasses.txt
These data are the synthesis of field sampling efforts in 5 x 5m plots in open ecosystems of Odzala-Kokoua National Park. The txt file contains helpful information regarding further analysis of the .csv data.
Group 2: Stream data
Contained within the Streams_33N.shp and accompanying files, these data represent the modeled streams of Odzala-Kokoua National Park utilized in this study. They were produced from remote sensing products described in the publication.
Group 3: Shape files of Bais
The remaining files support a shapefile vector layer of bais in Odzala-Kokoua National Park as mapped by the complex remote sensing methodology discussed int he publication.

File: openeco_speciesmatrix.csv
Description: This .csv file contains all of the plot species combinations organized in a format most easily conducive to community ordination analyses including the NMDS performed in the associated publication. Each row represents a specific plot. Note that all columns with three letter names represent specific species codes, and the identity of those species can be found by searching for Evan Hockridge on iNaturalist, navigating to the observations of the account, and adding the three letter code to the tags menu. This means of accessing the names of each species allows for the taxonomy of the species identified to remain up-to-date automatically. For the names of indicator species at the time of publication, please see Table S4 in Appendix S1.
Variables
- ID: contains the name of each plant sampling plot
- Bai.Name: provides an accessible grouping variable representing where the plot is located
- Transect.Number: Organizational variable that are potentially useful in quality control checking the data to ensure there are no repeats, likely not useful for subsequent analyses (there should be no Transect.Number + Plot.Number duplicates).
- Plot.Number: Organizational variable that are potentially useful in quality control checking the data to ensure there are no repeats, likely not useful for subsequent analyses (there should be no Transect.Number + Plot.Number duplicates).
- forestplot: column is similarly useful for quality control efforts, and is likely not useful for anyone using these data outside the context of fieldwork at the field site. No plot included in this publication were contained in forests, so the value should always be FALSE.
- savannaplot: a useful variable for determining which landscape class a specific plot falls within. See Openeco_plotclasses.txt for more information on how to use this variable (representing if a plot is contained within a savanna open ecosystem type) can be used to further group the plots represented in this CSV.
