Abstract

This dataset contains a list of 8392 global commerical shipping ports, with geographic coordinates and four environmental variables (i.e. salinity, mean temperature during the warmest month, mean temperature during the coldest month and annual average temperature (all at water surface)). Data were primarily sourced from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration World Ocean Atlas. Data for estuarine and riverine ports has been corrected, where better information was available, with particular focus on Canadian port data and top last-ports-of-call for ships arriving to Canada.

Methods

A global list of 8392 ports was compiled based on Keller et al. (2011), with additions from Transport Canada based on transit histories (e.g. last port of call) of ships arriving to Canadian ports. Port environmental data for four variables (i.e. salinity, mean temperature during the warmest month, mean temperature during the coldest month and annual average temperature (all at water surface)) were obtained from Keller et al. (2011) and World Ocean Atlas 2013 Vol. 2 (Locarnini et al. 2013; Zweng et al. 2013). Salinities of estuarine or riverine ports modelled by Keller et al. (2011) were corrected where better information was available, and Canadian port data was verified and updated where necessary through literature search or personal communication with local experts.
