Abstract
Six professional development sessions were offered from 2021-2023 (three per academic year) to science teachers. The aims were to increase teacher knowledge regarding agricultural content, improve understanding of how agriculturally-relevant curriculum can be used to address learning standards, and quantify changes in knowledge and confidence in teachers to increase adoption of agriculturally-focused curriculum in STEM courses. This data set contains the survey responses obtained from consenting study participants, and is organized by session and year of offering. Sessions consisted of different topics, being one focused on Ecology, one focused on Nutrients and Fertilizers, and one focused on Genes and Genetics. Year 1 sessions were offered from 2021-2022 as a hybrid or virtual format, with sessions offered in 2022-2023 conducted as in-person workshops.

As part of the Ag is STEM: Connecting Agriculture to Environmental and Biological Science Curriculum grant, three separate professional development sessions were facilitated over two years. The professional development sessions aimed to increase the content knowledge, likelihood, and confidence of K-12 science teachers to integrate agricultural concepts into their courses related to the topics of ecology, nutrients, and genes and genetics.
The data for each year and session topic are compiled in separate data sets, titled either Year 1 or Year 2 and ecology, nutrient, or genes and genetics. Within the data sets the following information can be used to interpret the variables. Interested researchers can also view the label and values columns within the variable view window to see the specific instrument items and measurement information.
Description of the data and file structure
The data have been uploaded as ‘.csv’ files to increase accessibility. Column naming of study variables is described below:
1) Prefix to indicate the time which the data were collected (Ex: PreQ3_1):
- Pre – Data collected prior to the professional development session (pre-test)
- Post – Data collected 1 week following the professional development session (post-test)
- Mon9 – Data collected 9 months following the professional development session (post-test)
- Mon 17 – Data collected 17 months following the professional development session (post-test)
2) Construct number (Ex: PreQ3_1):
- PartCode – individual participant code for each year and session
- Q3 – How likely participants were to integrate content with an agricultural focus
- Q4 – Participants ranked the factors which influenced their likely to integrate agriculture
- Q5 –Participants could indicate additional factors which influenced their likelihood to integrate agriculture (open-ended question)
- Q7 – How confident participants were to integrate content with an agricultural focus
- Q9 – Participants ranked the factors which influenced their confidence to integrate agriculture
- Q10 – Participants could indicate additional factors which influenced their confidence to integrate agriculture (open-ended question)
- KQ – knowledge questions related to the session’s topic
- KnowCorrect – total number of knowledge questions the participant answered correctly
3) Question number (Ex: PreQ3_1):
- Q3, Q4, Q7, Q9, and KQ have individual items indicated by a different number
- Each individual item can be found in the label column of the variable view window
4) Question responses:
- All question responses have been provided as a number or as text.
- A “.” symbol indicates response not provided.
Sharing/Access information
This data has been published in a peer-reviewed article in Natural Sciences Education, and is accessible here:
All data were collected from human subjects that consented to participate in IRB-approved research activities (Study 2021B0008). All metrics were collected using a digital Qualtrics survey tool. Data were processed using extraction tools and verification of useability prior to analysis. Pre- and post-test identifiers were used to track change over time. All identifying data related to participants have been removed.
