Abstract
Mobile devices and multimedia content have recently played a central role in conveying information and ideas. In addition, these can also be used effectively for individualized learning situations. Successful mastery of writing and reading skills is considered a key competence for academic and professional success. Particular difficulties in spelling often show a high degree of persistence without appropriate intervention. Based on a BMBF-funded research project, a tablet-based spelling training program with handwritten input and direct feedback on word correctness was developed and applied. The data sets are raw data showing the development of children's spelling skills. They also include the writing movement and pressure of each letter of all children. The data sets indicate that the children's spelling improved as a result of the individualized tablet application.
Methods
An Android app on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 was developed for children in 3 and 4 grades in German elementary school. The app consists of a diagnostic session and training sessions. First, each user (child) starts with the diagnostic session, and analyzed which error categories of writing are weak. The weakest three categories out of 5 categories are considered in training sessions. Training sessions consist of 16 sessions, which are divided into three blocks (5 sessions) and a final session (session no. 16). The training starts with the word lists (35 words) with the weakest category. In the second block (from session no. 6), the second weakest category is considered. In the third block (from session no. 11), the third weakest category is listed. The app considers the user's level. For example, if the user studies over 125 words in the previous block, the number of words in the list increases by 7 words in the next block. If the user studies under 50 words in the previous block, the number of words in the list decreases by 7 words in the next block. The diagnostic sessions and training sessions have been done in the school first time (March-April, 2020). But, after regulation of Covid-19, children study words at home.
Usage notes
Data were collected by an Android app running on Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, Android 8.0.0, made in this lab and named HOT-T. The events were recoded when users push buttons or write letters using the Samsung Spen (stylus pen) on the tablet. Files in the Training folder include pen trajectory data. Each EVENT 'sUp' has PARAM2, which is the trajectory data, but the data is differential values. When you integrate the values to get the position data, you need an initial point. The initial point is in PARAM2 when EVENT is 'sDown'. This calibration information exists in all files in the Lübeck folder. But, not all files in the Hannover folder have the initial point values.
