Methods
Soil pH was measured using a soil to solution (H2O) ratio of 1:5 (w/v) following 1 h of shaking. Total C concentrations were determined using a CN analyzer (vario MAX CN; Elementar Analysensystem GmbH, Langenselbold, Germany). Exchangeable Al was determined by 1 M KCl extraction.
