Abstract
This dataset is related to a retraction of a published Biology Letters article, Sosiak et al. 2022, entitled "An Eocene Army Ant" (https://doi.org/10.1098/rsbl.2022.0398). Shortly after publication of Sosiak et al. (2022), we received reports from two readers of historical collections comprising specimens similar in appearance to the one we reported in our initial article. These historic collections were originally mislabeled and were more recently revealed to be much younger sub-fossil resins (copal); both of these collections were also established roughly around the same timeframe (1920–1930s) associated with the museum specimen from Sosiak et al. (2022). This prompted us to investigate the provenance of the specimen reported in Sosiak et al. (2022) via FTIR spectroscopy. Our spectroscopic analysis did not recover a unique characteristic signature of Baltic amber and confirms that the specimen we initially reported is not Baltic amber but instead most probably sub-fossil copal. These data comprise the raw FTIR spectroscopic data we used to generate Figure 1 in the retraction as well as the R code underpinning that figure.
