Abstract
For the study associated with this dataset, we created a database of lost and rediscovered tetrapod species and identified patterns in their distribution and factors influencing rediscovery. This appendix provides a list of the lost and rediscovered tetrapod species used in the analysis. It includes data on:
- taxonomy (class, order, family, species, common name, and whether the species is a subspecies);
- location (continent, country, region);
- each species threat status (as published on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
The appendix also indicates:
- whether each species was included in another list of lost tetrapod species published by the organisation Re:wild (https://www.rewild.org/);
- whether each species was used to construct the phylogenetic trees used for analysis.

Description of the data and file structure
A list of 1280 tetrapod species (856 lost; 424 rediscovered).
This Microsoft Excel file includes the following information for each species:
- taxonomy - class, order, family, scientific name, common name, and whether it is a subspecies (0 = not a subspecies; 1 = subspecies)
- status - either lost or rediscovered (0 = lost; 1 = rediscovered)
- location - continent, country, and region
- whether the species was used for the construction of phylogenetic trees (yes / no)
- whether the species was on the Re:wild-IUCN SSC list of lost species (0 = no; 1 = yes)
- IUCN Red List status (LC = Least Concern, NT = Near Threatened, VU = Vulnerable, EN = Endangered, CR = Critically Endangered, CR(PE) = Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct), EX = Extinct, DD = Data Deficient, NE = Not Evaluated).
