Emails: scottam3@mcmaster.ca, dworkin@mcmaster.ca, dukas@mcmaster.ca* *corresponding author All data collected by A.M.S., except "Reuven_AS_Obs_2019.csv" collected by R.D. Accepted for publication at Evolution (as of Sept 2021) Data files (presented below in chronological order with respect to the associated manuscript): 1. raw_soc_data_withG33_and35.csv These are the data from the main artificial selection experiment (presented in Fig. 2 and Fig. 5). In the lineage codes (U = "Up", or "High sociability"; D = "Down", or "Low sociability", "C" = "Control). Q1-Q8 are counts of the number of flies in each compartment per dish. These are summarized into a single sociability score using the equation described in the methods. 2. MatingSuccessR.csv These are data from the male mating success experiment (presented in Fig. 3A). Treatment codes (U = "Up", or "High sociability"; D = "Down", or "Low sociability"). Mated codes (0 = No, 1 = Yes). For cases where a mating occurs, Mating_Latency is provided in seconds. N/A values in Mating_Latency column correspond to cases where a mating did not occur, thus no mating latency values to report. As described in methods, trials were tested in groups of 12 "Vials", represented by "Rack". 3. Mate_choice_1F2M_processedR.csv These are data from the male mating competition experiment (presented in Fig. 3B). Each row represents one fly (i.e., each competition is represented by 2 rows in the dataset). Treatment, Mated, Vial, Rack codes as described in above dataset. 1 fly from each competition was colored using pink dust ("Pink") and one was uncolored ("Unc"). "Unc Mating" and "Pink Mating" refer to the cases where a mating occured, and which fly mated (non-zero numbers, referring to time remaining in the trial at time of mating). Note negative numbers in "Pink Mating" and "Pink Latency" indicate no mating occured with that fly. N/A values in Latency column correspond to cases where a mating did not occur, thus no mating latency values to report. "Mated" indicates whether the focal fly mated, and if Mated = 1 (yes), latency in seconds provided in "Latency" column. "Treatment" and "Color" provide those data for the focal fly. "Lineage" refers to the focal fly, "CompetitorLin" refers to the other fly in the competition. 4. Mate_choice_2F1M_processedR.csv These are data from the female mating competition experiment (presented in Fig. 3C). Similar to above dataset, although "Unc mating", "Pink mating" and "Unc latency", "Pink latency" represented in a single column each (i.e., times indicate both a mating occured if not N/A, and a latency). N/A values indicate a mating did not occur with a fly of that colour treatment. Otherwise, data are presented as above in data set 3. 5. SocSel_FFA_data.csv These are data from the female-female aggression experiment (presented in Fig. 4A). "Aggression" and "SideFencing" total durations presented in seconds per trial. 6. SocSel_MMA_data.csv These are data from the male-male aggression experiment (presented in Fig. 4B). These data are analogous to the above female-female aggression data, however include additional information on number of flies on food patches (not included in the final manuscript). Overall trial data (i.e., trial-level key) provided in M-M_Aggression_Numbering.csv. 7. Soc_followUp1_NND.csv These are data from the nearest-neighbor-distance follow-up experiment (presented in Fig. 6). Nearest-neigbhor distances in pixels provided as medians per sample time per trial ("NNMed") and means ("NNMean"). Dish diameter provided in pixels ("Diameter"). "XL", "XR", "YT", "YB" represent pixel bounds in the video corresponding to the left, right, top, and bottom of the arena. The key providing trial-level information (including Lineage, sex, etc.) provided in "NND_key.csv". 8. Reuven_AS_Obs_2019.csv These are data from two sessions of direct observations (in generations 9 and 12) of several behaviours, including low-level aggression (represented by tallies in "Aggression"column) and wing waving (ww in "Aggression" column). N/A values in Aggression column indicate trials where no aggression was observed. Data described in results section, but not associated with a figure in the ms. Included in the data set but not published in the ms are data on number of flies on food in each compartment (Q1 F-Q8 F) and off food in each compartment (Q1 Off - Q8 Off).
