(2019) Sixteen years of bathymetry and waves at San Diego Beaches, Scientific Data. ----- EXAMPLE FILE: Format: netcdf4_classic Global Attributes: title = 'Nearshore sand level measurements at Cardiff and Solana Beaches' summary = 'This file includes raw sand level measurements (horizontal and vertical locations) for a single survey at Cardiff-Solana Beach. The global attribute `date` associated with this survey (with format YYYYMMDD) is used for bookkeeping only; for more temporal precision/ accuracy use the `time` variable when available. (Note: Some surveys span multiple days and original bookkeeping was done using local dates rather than UTC.) The `timeMean` global attribute is calculated as the average of binned survey UTC time data when available; otherwise the surveys are assumed as occurring at mid-day local time on the bookkeeping date(s) and converted to an average UTC time. The units of `timeMean` are seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 0:00. The GNSS equipped survey platforms used in this survey are identified using the `vehicle` global attribute, where A = ATV (all terrain vehicle), D = push dolly, J = jetski with acoustic sonar. The depth zones measured also vary with each survey and are identified by the `depthZones` global attribute where S = subaerial (ATV), W = wading depths (push dolly), B = bathymetric (jetski). The ATV driver manually records subaerial substrate type with a switch that differentiates between rock, cobble and sand. Substrate information is provided as variable `substrateType` when available. The alongshore spans surveyed vary in time, and are identified for each survey using the `regions` global attribute, where S = Solana (MOP index #s 00638-00664), C = Cardiff (MOP index #s 00665-00682). The south and northmost mappable MOP line indices with good coverage in this survey, as defined in Table 4 of Ludka et al. (2019), are listed as global attributes `southmostMOP` and `northmostMOP`. (MOP line locations are included in the cardiff-solana_MOP_definitions.nc and cardiff-solana_MOP_definitions.kml files.) Cardiff nourishment placement occurred from 20121025 to 20121028, and Solana nourishment placement occurred from 20121104 to 20121127 (YYYYMMDD). Regions estimated as being significantly influenced by nourishment at the time of this survey are listed in the `nourishmentInfluence` global attribute where letters correspond to region. (C = Cardiff, S = Solana, and 0 signifies that no region was significantly influenced by nourishment at this time.) The transects driven are identified in the `transects` global attribute and vary between survey. Alongshore transects are driven freeform by the driver (typically 10m apart). Cross-shore transect locations are predetermined and included as variables when used in the survey. Note that prior to November 2010 survey transect lines are not typically aligned with MOP lines (wave model output) at Cardiff-Solana. Survey notes created by the field crew engineers and technicians are included in global attributes `description`, `collection_information`, `processing_information`, `completeness_report`, and `details*` when available. Some of the notes on data formatting, datums, and coordinate systems may be out outdated in these fields and are superseded by the metadata in the variable attributes. See the `cardiff-solana_survey_info.nc` file for complete lists of all survey filenames, dates, depth zones surveyed, alongshore regions surveyed, south and north- most mappable MOP line indices with good coverage, regions influenced by nourishment, and vehicles and transects driven.' date = '20160929' timeMean = 1475175600 vehicles = 'ADJ' depthZones = 'SWB' regions = 'CS' southmostMOP = '00638' northmostMOP = '00682' nourishmentInfluence = 'CS' transects = 'mop100' processing_level = 'quality_controlled' Conventions = 'CF-1.6' standard_name_vocabulary = 'CF Standard Name Table v64' keywords = 'Earth Science > Oceans > Coastal Processes > Shoreline / Beaches / elevation / sediment transport' history = 'version1_20190407' corresponding_author = 'Bonnie Ludka' contact = 'bludka@ucsd.edu' references = 'Sixteen years of bathymetry and waves at San Diego beaches, Ludka et al. This data set contains 5-column ASCII survey point data from a strip of San Diego County Coastline (including: back beach, beach and swash zone and offshore to approximately 10meters) in Cardiff-by-the-Sea). Terrestrial data was collected using an ATV (Yamaha Grizzly) survey system mounted with GPS receiver and a hand pushed dolly. Offshore data were collected with a GPS and sonar equipped jetski. The survey consisted of 46 cross-shore tracks (~ 100m horizontal spacing) collected from approximately 1.5 hours prior to and after low tide and also around the high tide. One GPS base station (On site at a surveyed location in the Cardiff parking lot) was in operation during the survey. The Integrative Oceanography Department, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD owns and operates the survey systems. NOTE: Starting 20070829, a fifth column of substrate data has been added. See the Supplemental Information for details.' collection_information = 'Terrestrial (ATV) systems utilizing Ashtech Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers (Z-Extreme) provide platform positioning. The GPS receivers record pseudo-range and phase information at 5Hz for post-processing. Orientation is determined with a SBG Systems Ellipse-A gyro recording roll, pitch and yaw at 10 Hz. In addition to post-processed data, 1 Hz real-time kinematic carrier phase differentially corrected data are also acquired as a navigation aid and as a supplement to post-processed data. The data files are comprised of five columns: Lat, Lon, Z(rel. to MSL), DateTime(UTC), Substrate type. The Substrate type is defined by a numeric code: 0 = No data, 1 = Sand, 2 = Cobbles, 3 = Bedrock. The substrate type was identified by the ATV driver at the time of the survey.' processing_information = 'Transfer raw GPS data from both base station and rover Ashtech GPS receivers to processing computer.
