********************************** CONTENTS *********************************** All files are part of the study “Sexual conflict drives antagonistic armaments through sex-specific action of Hox genes in a genus of water striders” by Crumiere and colleagues. These files are used for morphological comparisons related to mating rate and mapping of phenotypic traits on phylogeny. 1. README.txt - This file. Including a description of the various files, variables and abbreviations. 2.Genbank_accession_numbers.xlsx - This file contains all the Genbank accession numbers of the genetic sequences used in this study. Accession numbers are classified by species and by genes. Data from this file were used to construct the phylogeny. This file can be open with Excel. 3. Concatenated_sequence_alignment.fasta - This file contains sequence alignments of concatenation performed using Geneious version 7.1.9. Data from this file were used to construct the phylogeny. This file can be read using text editor and Geneious. 4. Tree.txt - This file is the tree generated using MrBayes version 3.2.6 in Geneious version 7.1.9. This tree in Netwick format was used to map phenotypic complexity of males and females. The file can be open with a text editor and with R. 5. Data.xlsx - This file contains all the quantitative data measured in this study. This file can be open with Excel and R. For more details about abbreviations and variables please read below. 6. R_Script_final.Rmd - This file contain the R script used to visualize and analyze data from the file Data.xlsx. It also allows to visualize the file Tree.txt and allows to perform phylogenetic analysis of the dimorphic traits. This file was used to perform t-test, wilcoxon test, polr analysis and CMH test. It contains additional explanations about the process of analysis and packages used. It can be open with Rstudio 0.99.486. ******************************************************************************* Explications for Data.xlsx file: Sheet1: "MaleWT" contains data of the male phenotype and their respective tournament (replicate) and rank (successful, intermediate and unsuccessful). Sheet2: "FemaleWT" contains data of the female phenotype (pronotum projection (Winged) vs. narrow abdomen (Wingless)) and their respective tournament (replicate) and rank (successful, intermediate and unsuccessful). Sheet3: "FemaleCut" contains data of the female phenotype (amputated pronotum projection (Winged) vs. narrow abdomen (Wingless)) and their respective tournament (replicate) and rank (successful, intermediate and unsuccessful). Sheet4: "Succes vs Unsucces males" contains data of phenotypes for the opposite performing males, successful vs. unsuccessful. Sheet5: "Male CMH" contains distribution of male morphs (winged vs. wingless) depending if they are successful (W), intermediate (I) and unsuccessful (L). "Replicate" indicates in which replicates males competed. Sheet6: "Female CMH" contains distribution of female morphs (pronotum projection (Winged) vs. narrow abdomen (Wingless)) depending if they are successful (W), intermediate (I) and unsuccessful (L). "Replicate" indicates in which replicates females competed. Sheet7: "FemaleC CMH" contains distribution of female morphs (amputated pronotum projection (Winged) vs. narrow abdomen (Wingless)) depending if they are successful (W), intermediate (I) and unsuccessful (L). "Replicate" indicates in which replicates females competed. Sheet8: "Arms race" contains a cumulative matrix of traits used to reconstructed phenotypic complexity. The column Female_trais_modified is a modified version of the column Female_traits in order to make the calcul of phylogenetic signal possible. Sheet9: "Male way of action" contains data of males interacting (expressed in number of interactions and Frequency (Fq)) with the different combination of morphs to determine the way males prefer approach females depending morphs ecotypes. (MNW: Male non winged; FMW: Female non winged; MW: Male winged; FW: Female winged). "Orientation" are the different combination of legs targeted by males and "Orientationbis" is the classification if males attacked females by the front, the side or the back. Sheet10: "Way of action by female morphs" contains pooled data of males interacting with each female morph. This data are expressed in frequency and comes from the Sheet9. (FMW_Fq: Frequency of males interacting with non winged female ; FW_Fq: Frequency of males interacting with winged female. "Orientation" are the different combination of legs targeted by males and "Orientationbis" is the classification if males attacked females by the front, the side or the back. Sheet11: "Interactions and matings" contains the count of interactions, matings and mating frequency (FQ_mating) over the number of total interactions related to the different combination of morphs (condition) and related to each female morph (conditionbis). (MNW: Male non winged; FMW: Female non winged; MW: Male winged; FW: Female winged). Sheet12: "Duration of interactions" contains data of duration (Duration expressed in centiseconds) of pre-mating fights between males and females by the different morph combination (condition) and related to each female morph (conditionbis). (MNW: Male non winged; FMW: Female non winged; MW: Male winged; FW: Female winged). "ID" indicates the replicates ID where the data were recorded (for example: MNW+FNW.T1 is a wingless male with a wingless females during replicate 1). 1, 2 and 3 are the 3 technical replicates of the same biological replicates. 4, 5 and 6 goes together and 7, 8 and 9 too. Sheet13: Conditions used for outline analysis of abdomen shape. (W: Winged Rhagovelia antilleana; WL: Wingless Rhagovelia antillenana; RO: Rhagovelia obesa). Sheet14: Count of eggs in winged and wingless Rhagovelia females. ********************************* CONTACTING ********************************** For any questions contact me at: Antonin Crumiere e-mail: antonin.crumiere@gmail.com
