Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: The feather growth rate (FGR) was assessed by measuring and counting growth bars. A segment from the surface of the vane (vexillum) of each feather, usually consisting of 10 (range 7-11) growth bars, was marked and measured. The FGR (mm/day) was calculated as the segment length divided by the number of growth bars in the segment. Each feather was inspected against light to ascertain fault bar presence (coded as 1 - present and 0 - absent), with fault bars defined as narrow bars of missing barbules oriented perpendicularly to the rachis. 2.
