README/Reference file for data associated with the manuscript 'Predicting wave-induced sediment resuspension at the perimeter of lakes,' in review at Water Resources Research Data descriptions for: 'Buoy_WindSpeed_XXXmin.txt' and 'Buoy_WindDir_XXXmin.txt' Author: Derek Roberts, UC Davis, dcroberts@ucdavis.edu October 2018 This file describes the collection and production of the data provided in the files 'Buoy_WindSpeed_XXXmin.txt' and 'Buoy_WindDir_XXXmin.txt' for the manuscript 'Predicting wave-induced sediment resuspension at the perimeter of lakes,' in review at Water Resources Research, herein referred to as "the main text." XXX in the file names refers to the window size (in minutes) associated with the averaging window applied to the data as described below. Data collection locations: UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Buoys - Wind sensors positioned 3 m above the water TERC TDR1 39.041 N 120.080 W TERC TDR2 38.990 N 120.051 W NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Research Buoys - Wind sensors positioned 4 m above the water NASA TB1 39.153 N 120.000 W NASA TB2 39.109 N 120.011 W NASA TB3 39.110 N 120.075 W NASA TB4 39.155 N 120.072 W Data collection contact: Derek Roberts, UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC), dcroberts@ucdavis.edu %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% 'Buoy_WindSpeed_XXXmin.txt' - wind speed at 10-minute time step at the six buoy locations listed above. Data averaged/down-sampled from 2-minute raw data at NASA buoys and from 5-minute raw data at TERC buoys. XXX refers to the window size (in minutes) of the backwards-looking moving-average filter applied to the data prior to down-sampling. "NaN" values indicate missing data points due to either instrument failure or malfunction. Headers: DateTime_UTC - yyyy-mm-dd HH:MM time stamps (UTC time zone) Wind Speed (m/s) - wind speed in meters/second at the listed meteorological buoy. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% 'Buoy_WindDir_XXXmin.txt' - wind direction at 10-minute time step at the six buoy locations listed above. Averaging of directional data performed by decomposing directional data into east-west and north-south components of the associated unit vector, averaging the component vectors in time, then converting the averaged component vectors back to cardinal direction using an inverse tangent function (see Berens 2009 as cited in the main text). Headers: DateTime_UTC - yyyy-mm-dd HH:MM time stamps (UTC time zone) Wind Direction (deg) - wind direction in degrees clockwise from north FROM which the wind is blowing at the listed meteorological buoy. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
