"Data for Reichert et al. ""Exploring the hidden landscape of female preferences for complex signals"", Evolution, Raw data" Compiled by: Michael Reichert University College Cork "School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences" G15 Cooperage Building Distillery Fields Campus Cork Ireland Files are saved as tab-delimited .txt files. "The ""Data.txt"" file gives the raw data used for the experimental analyses" Each row denotes an individual female's responses to one of the experimental stimuli. The column headings are defined as follows: FemaleID: Unique number assigned to each individual female Date: Date the female's response to stimulus was measured in DD/MM/YYYY format "Population: The population of origin of the individual (see text for geographic coordinates). ""Goett"", Goettingen, Germany; ""Berlin"", Berlin, Germany; ""Kuehtai"", Kuhtai, Austria. Population was not noted for some wild-caught individuals tested in 2015. These have blanks for entries, but in all of these cases the individuals derived from either the Goettingen or Berlin population." "Reared: Whether the individual was caught in the wild ""wild"" or was reared from eggs in the laboratory ""lab""." "Stimulus: The acoustic stimulus the individual was exposed to. Each stimulus is given a unique number. Most stimuli can be identified by the subsequent columns, but a full list of stimuli corresponding to each number is available in a separate file titled ""StimulusList""" "AppDur: The duration, in ms, of the appendage (for noise appendages). For heterospecific appendages, this is instead a text description of the stimulus (e.g., ""synthbrunneus"" refers to the synthetic Chorthippus brunneus appendage). This is ""na"" when the stimulus had no appendage." "DelayDur: The duration, in ms, of the time elapsing between the appendage and the calling song (see Text for details). This is ""na"" in cases where only the appendage was played, with no calling song." "LeadLag: Whether the appendage was placed before the calling song (""lead) or after the calling song (""lag"") " "SongDur: The duration of the song. ""standard"" refers to the standard 25-syllable song; ""short"" refers to the shortened 10-syllable song. Stimuli with no song whatsoever (e.g., stimuli in which only the appendage element was broadcast) have ""none"" for this column. Other song types (e.g., noise, silence and attractive-song controls) are denoted by descriptive text; consult the ""StimulusList"" file for details." "Gaps: If a calling song was present and had gaps within syllables (see Text), this is given ""y"", otherwise ""n""" Ntrials: The number of times the individual female was exposed to this stimulus during an experimental session. Nresp: The number of trials during which the individual female responded to the stimulus by producing a response song Nnonresp: The number of trials during which the individual female did not respond to the stimulus by producing a response song PropResp: The proportion of all trials in which the female responded by producing a response song: Nresp/Ntrials
