Metadata for file seedSetBasedOnPositionWithinHead.csv. This dataset contains seed set and phenology information about heads of Echinacea angustifolia that flowered in the Echinacea Project main common garden experimental plot (C1) in Douglas County, Minnesota, USA during 2005. Each row corresponds to a sample of achenes collected from the top, middle, or bottom of a flowering head. Columns are separated by commas. Column Descriptions hd_ID: Unique identifier for each flowering head. ach_pos: The position of the achenes within the seedhead. Bot = achenes resulting from the 30 earliest florets to shed pollen (bottom of seedhead). Top = achenes resulting from the 30 latest florets to shed pollen (top of seedhead). Head = a random sampling of 30 achenes from florets in between the ‘bot’ and ‘top’ positions. seed_ct: Total number of fertilized achenes in sample. sty_ct: Total number of florets that shed pollen in sample. mean_pos_date: Average date that florets in this sample shed pollen (in day of year, January 1 = 1). Field data were collected by the authors and other members of Team Echinacea during each summer. Volunteers and interns at the Chicago Botanic Garden contributed to cleaning heads and assessing seed set in achenes. Analysis of this dataset was conducted using R. The script file is named seedSetBasedOnPositionWithinHead.r.
