Genotype and fertility raw data from: McDermott, SR and MAF Noor. (2010) Genetics of hybrid male sterility among strains and species in the Drosophila pseudoobscura species group. Evolution. Eight data files are included- two for each backcross. Three of the four crosses performed were between Drosophila pseudoobscura bogotana white and one of three D. persimilis strains (MSH1, MSH3, SCI). Each of those three crosses has two files, one for all individuals and one for individuals of only "bog" genotypes at the XL, XR and 2nd chromosome inversions. As described in the paper, the cross was performed as: D. persimilis male x bog white female --> F1 female x bog white male The seventh and eighth data files are for the data of testing allelism of the 2nd chromosome collinear QTL. As described in the paper, the cross was performed as: D. pseudoobscura pseudoobscura Flagstaff1993 x D. persimilis MSH1993 --> F1 females x persimilis MSH1993 --> BC1 females x persimilis MSH1993 --> BC2 females x MSH1993 --> BC3 females x MSH1993. A stock was made of flies with the correct genotype ("pseudo" at 2nd chr QTL, "per" everywhere else), and males from these stocks were used in the following cross: D. p. bog white females x Introgressed males --> F1 females x bog white males. Again, one of the two files is for all individuals and the other is for individuals of only "bog" genotypes at the XL, XR and 2nd chromosome inversions. Data files are comma-delimited, and BCbogMSH_ files have 3 columns: 1) Assignment: Whether the fly was fertile (1) or sterile (0) 2) Genotype of marker on XL chromosome arm 3) Genotype of marker on XR chromosome arm 4) Genotype of marker on second chromosome BCbogMSH_-Lim files have six columns: 1) Assignment: Whether the fly was fertile (1) or sterile (0) 2) Genotype of marker at 2nd chromosome QTL 3) Genotype of marker at 2nd chromosome QTL 4) Genotype of marker at 3rd chromosome QTL 5) Genotype of marker at 4th chromosome QTL 6) Genotype of marker at 4th chromosome QTL The genotype column headers indicate the marker or markers used for genotyping in that backcross. The two markers that were used for 2nd and 4th chromosomes (last five columns) flanked the QTLs. The BCbogMSH3-lim file does not have two markers for the 4th chromosome QTL. Genotypes are listed as "b" (for "bog"), "p" (for persimilis), or "ps" (for pseudoobscura pseudoobscura). For the X-chromosome markers, the backcross males were hemizygous, so it indicates the actual hemizygous genotype. For the 2-chromosome markers, the backcross males were homozygous or heterozygous. In that case, a genotype of "het" indicates a heterozygote, whereas genotypes of "b" or "ps" are homozygous. Heterozygous genotypes are NOT listed as "het" in the Allelism Q2-Lim and Q4-Lim files. Because an individual could be heterozygous for pseudooobscura/bogotana at one marker and persimilis/bogotana at another, the heterozygous genotypes are instead listed as "ps/b" for pseudoobscura/bogotana and "pb" as persimilis/bogotana. Relevant to the bog white ER line- the flies used were selected for bearing the white mutation (on the XL chromosome arm). Hence, far fewer flies bore the D. persimilis allele at the XL chromosome arm marker. All other crosses discussed in the paper are from Brown et al. (2004) and Chang and Noor (2007).
