Samples were analysed for C and N stable isotope ratios and elemental percentage concentration at Iso-Analytical, Crewe, UK, using an elemental analyser (Europe Scientific). The standard for nitrogen was air and V-PDB for carbon. Reference material used for delta13C and delta15N analysis of samples was IA-R042 (NBS-1577B powdered bovine liver). IA-R038 (L-alanine delta15N S. D, = 0.1, delta13C S. D. = 0.1) and a mixture of IA-R006 (cane sugar) and IA-R046 (ammonium sulphate) were run as internal standards to check for analytical precision (delta15N S. D. = 0.15, delta13C S. D. = 0.05). SIA Resource ============== Samples were standardised to approx. 3 mg for macroalgae and plankton, into tin capsules (6 x 4 mm, Sercon Ltd) on a Mettler Toledo XS3DU Microbalance. Some samples did not contain enough material for analysis of N and C stable isotopes. These are indicated by "---" in the appropriate cell.
