Data collected in experiments described in the manuscript "Outcomes of co-infection by two potyviruses: implications for the evolution of manipulative strategies" Experimental results are presented in separate spreadsheets: - Volatile collection experiment Organic volatile compounds collection and quantification: Data obtained during 5 blocks of collections on the four treatments: Mock-inoculated plants, Single inoculation with WMV isolate HQ11, single inoculation with ZYMV isolate HBCF and mixed inoculation with a 1:1 mixture of HQ11 and HBCF. The emission of each of the main 16 compounds, in ng per gram of fresh plant mass, over the 6 hours of collection,are indicated by increasing order of their retention time by gas chromatography. Total emitted volatiles are calculated as the sum of each of those compounds - Aphid performance experiment Count of the colony size of each plant (number of aphid), two weeks after the establishment of 10 first or second instar aphids, on the four treatments: Mock-inoculated plants, Single inoculation with WMV isolate HQ11, single inoculation with ZYMV isolate HBCF and mixed inoculation with a 1:1 mixture of HQ11 and HBCF - Aphid choice experiment Each trial is an independent choice test between the leaf of a a virus infected plant (of the treatment WMV-HQ11, ZYMV-HBCF, or a mixed infection of borh viruses) against the leaf of a mock-inoculated plant. The number of aphid on each leaf is recorded after one hour (30 aphids are originally deposited at equidistance from both leaves). New plants are used for each test. The fresh weight of tested leaves is indicated, as well as the position of the virus-treatment leaf (left or right) in the testing arena. - Surface and color phenotypes (Experimental blocks 1 and 2) Data collected for all experimental plants of the two blocks of mixed infection experiment (5 replicates for each treatment and each block, 8 and 9 replicates of the mock treatments). Treatments include single infections of WMV isolates RS22 and HQ11, single infections of ZYMV isolates RSHS and HBCF and all possible combinations of all double WMV-ZYMV inoculations. The data recorded are plant surface and mean values of RGB colour component for all plants, using whole plant pictures. - ZYMV virus qPCR quantification (Experimental blocks 1 and 2) Data collected for the ZYMV experimental plants (5 replicates for each treatment and each block). Treatments include single infections of ZYMV isolates RSHS and HBCF and all possible combinations of all double WMV-ZYMV inoculations. ZYMV RNA estimates (RNA coat protein gene copies number per ng of extracted plant RNA) for all plant ZYMV treatments. Log-transformed values used in the statistical analyses are also indicated - WMV virus qPCR quantification (Experimental blocks 1 and 2) Data collected for the experimental plants (5 replicates for each treatment and each block). Treatments include single infections of WMV isolates RS22 and HQ11, and all possible combinations of all double WMV-ZYMV inoculations. WMV RNA estimates (RNA coat protein gene copies number per ng of extracted plant RNA) for all plant WMV treatments, Log-transformed values used in the statistical analyses are also indicated
