Chick weight pre-inj D8 (g): The mass of each chick (in grams) on day 8 post-hatch, immediately prior to immunization with either Lipopolysaccharide or saline. For chicks in the respirometry trials, individuals were weighed in the lab (immediately prior to being put in the metabolism chamber). For chicks that did not experience respirometry, this measurement occurred in the field. For the 3 chicks that were immunized after removal from the metabolism chamber (rather than immunized prior to being put in the chamber), this mass measurement was taken immediately prior to being placed in the metabolic chamber. Chick weight post-resp. D8 (g): The mass of each chick (in grams) on day 8 post-hatch, immediately after removal from the metabolism chamber. Final weight (g) D8: Mass of the chick (in grams) on day 8 post-hatch. For chicks involved in respirometry, this was the mass immediately after removal from the metabolism chamber. For chicks that were never in a metabolism chamber, these values are identical to those in the ÒChick weight pre-inj D8 (g)Ó column. Mass change D8 to D9 (g): This value was calculated to show mass change of nestlings between days 8 and day 9 post hatch, in response to immunization (on day 8). Calculated as ÒWeight D9 (g) minus ÒChick weight pre-inj D8 (g). Elapsed time between weighings (D8-D9) (hr): Calculated as the time (in hours) that elapsed between immunization/weighing of nestlings on day 8 post-hatch and the subsequent weighing on day 9 post-hatch. Mass change D8 to D9/24-hr: Estimate of nestling mass change per 24 hour day, between days 8 and 9 post-hatch. Wing growth (D8 to D9)/24 hrs: Estimate of change in nestling wing length per 24 hour day, between days 8 and 9 post-hatch.
