SBE First Decade Survival and Growth -- README Below are descriptions of each column in all three data sets available in this package. sbeSurvivalDryad: The proportional survival of species within experimental plots. 1336 rows, 9 columns. Column Description sp Species name. There were 16 tree species planted in the experiment. Fill binomial names and authorities are shown in the manuscript text and supplementary material. pl Experimental plot identity. There are 112 unique plot IDs. sp.comp Species composition ID. There are 33 compositions: 16 monocultures, 16 4-sp mixtures (Suppl. Mat.), and the 16-sp mixture. Compositions were assigned at the plot level. sp.pl Species within plot identity. Produced using `interaction(sp, pl)` in R. Factor with 672 levels. Used for the random effect in the survival model. spBySurveyByComp Species by survey by species composition ID. Produced using `interaction(sp, survey.type, sp.comp)` in R. Factor with 192 levels. Used for the fixed effect in the survival model. sd Species richness of the composition treatment assigned to that plot. Possible values are 1, 4 and 16. survey.type ID of which survey each observation was based from. There were two full surveys of the experiment (see manuscript). The names are either "census1" or "census2". survey.date The mean date of survey for trees of this species within this plot. Dates in POSIX date format YYYY-MM-DD. survival The proportional survival for trees of this species within this plot. Varies from 0 to 1. sbeGrowthDryad: The average size (over time, i.e. growth) of species within experimental plots. 1122 rows, 10 columns. Factor with 561 levels. Used for the random effect in the growth model. SP.sp.comp Species by survey by species composition ID. Produced using `interaction(sp, survey.type, sp.comp)` in R. Factor with 96 levels. A fixed effect in the growth model. sd Species richness of the composition treatment assigned to that plot. Possible values are 1, 4 and 16. survey.type ID of which survey each observation was based from. There were two full surveys of the experiment (see manuscript). The names are either "census1" or "census2". mean.daysSincePlanting Average number of days since seedlings were planted, for each species within a plot. mdsp.sc Average number of days since planting, as above, but scaled for analysis. It is scaled by centreing on the mean, and scaling the centred values by the standard deviation. mean.log.diam The average basal diameter (mm) of seedlings at this survey, for each species within a plot. Diameter was log10 transformed for analysis. sbeTraitsDryad: Species-level traits data that were correlated with survival and growth estimates. 16 rows, 3 columns. Column Description species Species name. Genus_species. wood.density The average wood density measured from seedling for each species. Calculations based on measurements from a subset of the individuals in the experiment. sla Specific leaf area, measured as m^2/kg, for each species. Calculations based on measurements from a subset of the individuals in the experiment.
