Data from: Van Horn, Russell C., Becky Zug, Robyn D. Appleton, Ximena Velez-Liendo, Susanna Paisley, and Corinn LaCombe. 2015. Photos provide information on age, but not kinship, of Andean bears. PeerJ. 2015:03:4471:1:0:ACCEPTED ########################################################## ## Filename: "VanHornetal15_data3_KinshipSimilarity.csv"## ########################################################## *Format: comma-delimited text file *Description: The data matrix consists of 5 columns (variables) with one header row and 1043 rows (records) of data, where each row presents a participant's ranking of the similarity in markings between two photos of Andean bears. *Variables: "ParticipantID" = 1 of 109 unique identifiers of participants in the online survey. "PhotoPair" = 1 of 11 unique pairs of images of Andean bears. "Tremarctos" = a binary variable indicating whether the participant had previous experience working with Andean bears ("Yes") or not ("No"). "Pedigreer" = the pedigree r-value summarizing the kinship between the two Andean bears shown in the pair of photos. Between two diploid organisms the pedigree r-values can range from 0 (unrelated) to 1.0 (identical twins) across a continuous range of intermediate values such as 0.25 (e.g., half-sibling pair) and 0.5 (e.g., full-sibling pair, parent-offspring pair). "SimilarityRating" = 1 of 4 ratings of the perceived similarity of the bears' facial markings with 1 = "exactly the same", 2 = "similar", 3 = "slightly different", and 4 = "extremely different". Participants were also given the option of not responding but non-responses were not analyzed and are not included in this data file. *For further Information contact: Russ Van Horn, Ph.D. Institute for Conservation Research San Diego Zoo Global 15600 San Pasqual Valley Road Escondido, CA 92027-7000 rvanhorn(at)sandiegozoo.org russellvanhorn(at)gmail.com
