README file for "Nothing as it seems: Behavioural plasticity appears correlated with morphology and colour, but is not in a Neotropical tadpole" Authors: Reuben, P.L. and Touchon, J.C. DATA FILES File name: Reuben_Touchon_tadpole_measurements.csv Description: Measurements of color, morphology (PCs from Geometric and swimming behavior for Dendropsophus ebraccatus tadpoles raised with insect or fish chemical cues or as predator free controls, and then exposed to these same cues for swimming trials (if appropriate). Note that for measures of swimming behavior, rows with NAs indicate tadpoles that were not tested. PhotoNumber: Corresponds to a randomly assigned number visible in each photograph. Used to ensure that measurements were taken blind of the predator treatment. PhotoDate: The date the photo was taken, which is also the date the tadpole was 10 days old. Date is coded in terms of day month and year DDMMYYYY. Family: Original code for family. Corresponds solely to the order that adult frogs were bred. Treatment: Predator cue treatment that tadpoles were raised with. 3 options (Fish, Insect, and Control). 10 tadpoles from each family were raised with each chemical cue for 10 days. Tadpole: There were 6 tadpoles raised per family and rearing cue combination. TadCode: A unique code to identify each tadpole by its family, rearing treatment, and individual tadpole ID. TailSpotArea: The area of the pigmented spot at the posterior end of the tail, in mm2. The area was drawn by eye. Hue: The average hue of the tail spot. Values range from 0-255. Lower values indiciate longer wavelength colors (e.g. red) and increasing values indicate colors with shorter wavelengths. Calculated from the Hue/Saturation/Brightness function in ImageJ. Saturation: The average saturation of the tail spot. Values range from 0-255. Lower values indiciate less pure colors and increasing values indicate colors with greater purity. Calculated from the Hue/Saturation/Brightness function in ImageJ. Brightness: The average brightness of the tail spot. Values range from 0-255. Lower values indiciate darker colors and increasing values indicate brighter colors. Calculated from the Hue/Saturation/Brightness function in ImageJ. Csize: The centroid size resulting from the Procrustes fit of landmark data collected for each tadpole. sqrt.TSA: The square root of Tail Spot Area. Linearizes the scaling of tail spot area. rel.TSA: The relative Tail Spot Area, calculated as the square root of tail spot area divided by the centroid size. Color.PC1: The first principal component from a PCA of rel.TSA, Hue, Saturation, and Brightness. Color.PC2: The second principal component from a PCA of rel.TSA, Hue, Saturation, and Brightness. GM.Comp1: The first principal component from a PCA of the landmark data from 14 landmarks aligned with a General Procrustes Analysis. GM.Comp2: The second principal component from a PCA of the landmark data from 14 landmarks aligned with a General Procrustes Analysis. TestCue: The predator cue treatment that tadpoles were exposed to for assays of swimming behavior. 3 options (Fish, Insect, and Control). Cohort: The cohort (test group) that tadpoles were tested in for swimming behavior. Behavior was tested on 6 separate days. Rep: Within each testing cohort, there were up to 4 testing replicates. All tadpoles from all families tested on a single day (i.e. a cohort) were fully randomized across replicates. Bowl: Within each replicate for swimming trials, 18 bowls were used. Records which bowl in the array a given tadpole was tested in. TestDate: Date the swimming trials were conducted. Date is coded in terms of day month and year DDMMYYYY. TotalDist: The total distance swam by a tadpole during the 21 minute swimming trial. Distance was calculated by recording the location of tadpoles in a grid system every 1.5 minutes and then calculating the linear distance between all grid coordinates. This therefore provides a conservative estimate of distance traveled. DistRound: The total distance swam rounded to the nearest whole number. Used in analyses of swimming behavior. File name: Reuben_Touchon_tad_shapes.tps Description: A TPS file that contains the raw data of 14 landmarks collected for all tadpoles using the digitizing app in the StereoMorph R package.
