Description of studies included in forest precipitation manipulation experiment review. Contact: heidi.asbjornsen@unh.edu This table summarizes a literature review of 65 published precipitation manipulation experiments in forest and shrubland ecosystems. This review was conducted as part of an article proposing guidelines for conducting such experiments. For additional information on literature review criteria and methods, as well as summary statistics and figures derived from these data, please see the article: Asbjornsen H, Campbell JL, Jennings KA, McIntire CD, Vadeboncoeur MA, Templer PH, Phillips R, Bauerle TL, Bowles F, Dietze M, Frey S, Groffman P, Guerrieri R, Hanson PJ, Kelsey E, Knapp AK, McDowell NG, Meir PW, Novick KA, Ollinger SV, Pockman W, Schaberg PG, Wullschleger SD, Smith MD, Rustad LE. Guidelines and considerations for designing field experiments simulating precipitation extremes in forest ecosystems. Methods in Ecology and Evolution, accepted. Data are formatted as a CSV file. Missing data are indicated by asterisks. Data fields are described below. Site_ID: A unique identifier assigned to each study site in the reviewed precipitation change experiments in forest and shrubland ecosystems. Study_ID:A unique identifier assigned to each study reviewed. A study may include multiple sites (site_ID). Publication1_Authors: First author of a publication reviewed for each precipitation change study. Publication1_year:The year of the publication, associated with the authors in ‘Publication1_Authors’. Publication2_Authors: First author of a secondary publication reviewed for a precipitation change study, if one exists. Publication2_year:The year of the secondary publication, associated with ‘Publication2_Authors’. Study_Site_name: The name of the study or site where the precipitation change experiment takes place. Study_Location: The state or province and country where the study took place. Forest_Shrubland: Was the study ecosystem categorized as a forest, shrubland or both? Latitude_DD: Site latitude in decimal degrees. Precision varies according to how it was reported by the authors. Longitude_DD: Site longitude in decimal degrees. Precision varies according to how it was reported by the authors. Precipitation_manipulation_method: The method used for conducting the precipitation change manipulation in broad categories, including: throughfall exclusion, canopy cover or irrigation. Manipulation_type: The type of manipulation used in the study, including: (water) removals, (water) additions, (water) removals and additions, as well as co-occuring manipulations to temperature, CO2, and nutrients. Please refer to the cited publication for more details on each study design than can be characterized here. Plot_area_m2:The area of the plot size in square meters. Replication: The amount of plot-level replication used in the experiment; a value of 1 indicates that there was no replication at the plot level. Infrastructure_control: Did the study design report the use of an infrastructure control designed to measure any side-effects of the experimental infrastructure: yes or no. Buffer: Did the study design report the use of a buffer zone between plot edges and sampling/measurement locations within the plot: yes or no. Trenching: Did the study design report trenching used around the study plots: yes or no. Annual_precip_lit_mm: The annual precipitation (mm) for the site as reported in the publication(s). Annual_precip_CRU_mm: The calculated long-term mean annual precipitation (mm) for each site extracted from CRU TS3.22 high-resolution time series. Sites with missing data were either 1) excluded as too little information was included to allow the magnitude of the precipitation manipulation to be calculated, 2) the CRU grid did not cover the coordinates reported, or 3) The difference in the CRU mean annual precipitation and the annual precipitation listed in the publication differed by more than 30%. Annual_PET_CRU_mm: The calculated long-term mean annual potential evapotranspiration (mm) for each site extracted from CRU TS3.22 high-resolution time series. Missing data occurred in the same instances as described above for Annual_precip_CRU_mm. Change_from_annual_precipitation_percent_1: The percent change in annual precipitation due to the treatment. Using information reported in the literature, the amount of precipitation excluded (or added) from treatment plots was calculated from changes in mean annual precipitation, changes from annual precipitation (i.e., change relative to control plots), reported percent exclusion or addition, or from estimating the amount excluded (or added) from data figures. Change_from_annual_precipitation_percent_2: Percent change in annual precipitation due to a second level of treatment, if applicable. Change_from_annual_precipitation_percent_3: Percent change in annual precipitation due to a third level of treatment, if applicable.
