Data file used for the study "Social status and personality: stability in social position can promote the consistency of behavioural responses", by Anna Favati, Olof Leimar, Tommy Radesäter and Hanne Løvlie. File: social_status_and_personality_data.txt The file contains the social status of male domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus) in two pair setups, behavioral data from two novel arena tests performed after the pair setups, and information on the males' age and morphological characters. Empty cells indicate missing data. Column headings: Note that capital lettes are used as prefix to names of males/pairs/groups used in 2007 and lower case letters for data from 2011. id - the id-number of the males. year - the year during which the male took part in the study. group - the id of the group of four males that were morphologically matched, from which males were randomly chosen to form pairs. pair1 and pair2 - the pair id for each male of the first and second pair setup. status1 and status2 - the social dominance obtained in the first and second pair setups, respectively. dom - dominant sub - subordinate status_total - the combined information of status1 and status2. changed_status - whether the male changed social status between the two pair setups (yes) or not (no). vigilance1 and vigilance2 - the proportion of observations during which the male was vigilant in the first and second novel arena tests. crowing1 and crowing2 - the number of crows uttered. latency_enter1 and latency_enter2 - the latency to enter the arena from the adjacent home cage (seconds). boldness1 and boldness2 - whether the male entered the arena within 30 seconds. 1 - yes 0 - no area_changes1 and area_changes2 - the number of subarea transitions. activity1 and activity2 - the number of subarea transitions minus the number of unique areas visited plus 1, i.e. the number of subarea transitions to areas the male had already visited once. unique_areas1 and unique_areas2 - the number of subareas visited (1-8). weight - body weight (grams). comb - comb length (millimeters). tarsus - tarsus length (millimeters). age - the age of the male (years).
