Abundances of mollusc species recorded in four cores drilled through the Holocene sedimentary succession of the Po coastal plain (NW Italy). The counts represent complete molluscan shells or shell fragments which could be identified as unique individuals (e.g., apex for gastropods or umbo for bivalves). For bivalves, each valve was counted as one individual. Specimens lacking species-level identification and all terrestrial or exclusively freshwater species were excluded. See Kowalewski et al. (2015) for the details of sample processing and treatment of specimens in open nomenclature. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Description of the files and variables 1) abundances.csv Abundance matrix (samples x species). The first four columns contain information on samples. Sample.ID = unique sample identifier Locality = name of the locality where a core was drilled Well.ID = unique core identifier (combination of sheet number of the Italian Geological Map in the scale 1:50.000 and core number) Depth.Sampling = stratigraphic positions of samples measured in meters from the top of the core 2) taxa.csv List of taxa recorded in the cores. Taxon.ID = unique species identifier Family = family affiliation of a species Species = species name Author = authority of a species name Pleistocene.Record = species coded as 1 were recorded in the study area in core samples of the Pleistocene age (Marine Isotope Stage 5e; see Kowalewski et al., 2015) Pref.Depth = estimate of the preferred water depth of a species (in meters) based on the ENEA database Brackish = species coded as 1 are reaching high abundances in brackish conditions.
