These physician interviews represents the qualitative component of a larger mixed-methods research initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, led by this author team (Grant No. #1158673). The quantitative component of this study was reported in Moorhead LL, Holzmeyer C, Maggio LA, Stenberg RM, Willinsky JM (2015) In an age of open access to research policies: physician and public health NGO staff research use and policy awareness. http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0129708 Access to the data for the quantitative component is available in the Dryad Digital Repository.Êhttp://dx.doi.org/10.5061/dryad.7g984. This quantitative article, which described physician information use and its frequency influenced the selection of interview participants in that participants were chosen to represent a range of article usage levels: including extreme (7 physicians who accessed 200 or more articles), high (9 who accessed 40 to 199 articles), medium (10 who accessed 11 to 39 articles), and low (6 who accessed 1 to 10 articles), as well as those (6) who did not use any research articles. Thirty-eight interviews were conducted, however, due to expressed concerns by two participants their transcripts are not included. Data collection: All interviews were conducted over the phone by Laura Moorhead and recorded. Interviews were conducted between April 2014 and June 2014. The company Verbal Ink transcribed the audio recordings. The authors anonymized the transcripts by assigning all participants a code in the following format: MD-#. The numbers were randomly assigned. The authors further anonymized the transcripts by removing all participant identifiers. Identifiers were replaced with brackets and a generic placeholder was inserted (e.g. [participant name]. Identifiers included participant names, locations, institutional affiliations, and dates of information access.
