Missing values are given as blank cells. For data in 'metaanalysis_nulldistribution', column headings are in the following order and format: Family - Family names of genera counted Tropical - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as occurring in the tropics Subtropical - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as occurring in the subtropics Temperate - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as occurring in temperate climates Polar - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as occurring in polar climates Carnivore_tropic_level3+ - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as being carnivores Omnivore_tropic_level2-3 - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as being omnivores Herbivore/detritious_trophic_level<2 - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as being herbivores or detritivores Demersal/benthopelagic/reef-associated/bathydemersal - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as broadly demersal Pelagic/pelagic-neritic/bathy-pelagic - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as broadly pelagic Oceanic - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as Oceanic Tidepools/intertidal/mangroves - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as living in tidepools, the intertidal zone, or in mangroves Estuaries - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as living in estuaries Stream/Lakes - Proportion of genera within family listed by fishbase.org as living in freshwater streams or lakes For data in 'species_ratings', column headings are in the following order and format: species_name - Name of species and location sampled species_code - Associated species code used in phylogenies (see the files ’consensus_phylogenies’ and ‘BIphylogeny_posteriordistribution’) behavioral_rating_mean - The average degree of amphibious activity exhibited by taxa. Values range from 0 (aquatic) to 4 (highly terrestrial). Scores are defined in Table S2 of the supplementary information associated with the paper behavioral_rating_stdev - The standard deviation of the mean degree of amphibious activity exhibited by taxa; i.e., data provided in the ‘behavioral_rating_mean’ column behavioral_rating_min - The minimum behavioral rating of amphibious activity recorded for taxa. Values range from 0 (aquatic) to 4 (highly terrestrial). Scores are defined in Table S2 of the supplementary information associated with the paper. behavioral_rating_max - The maximum behavioral rating of amphibious activity recorded for taxa. Values range from 0 (aquatic) to 4 (highly terrestrial). Scores are defined in Table S2 of the supplementary information associated with the paper. behavioral_rating_N - Number of individual fish surveyed to compute behavioral ratings For phylogenies listed in 'consensus_phylogenies', columns are in the following order and format: Column 1 - Type/name of phylogeny listed in column 2; this refers to the Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, coalescence-based species tree, and Bayesian inference tree with unsampled taxa positioned using other published phylogenies or taxonomy. The construction and use of these trees are described in the main paper and its supplementary information Column 2 - Text string of each phylogeny in Newick format with taxon names embedded. These names are the same as those listed in the ‘species_code’ column in the ‘species_ratings’ file For phylogenies listed in 'BIphylogeny_posteriordistribution ', columns are in the following order and format: Column 1 - Tree number in posterior distribution; total of 7,500 trees Column 2 - Text string of each phylogeny in Newick format with taxon names embedded. These names are the same as those listed in the ‘species_code’ column in the ‘species_ratings’ file For data in ‘plasticity’, column headings are in the following order and format: species - Name of species sampled date - Date on which individual was sampled, in the format of day/month/year location - Location on Guam where individual was sampled; either Pago bay or Taga’chang bay. time_24hr - Time when individual was sampled in 24 hour format, which was then used in conjunction with date to determine corresponding tide level (in ’tide_metres’ column) and air temperature (in ‘airtemp_celsius’ column) tide_metres - Tide level in metres corresponding with the date and time when the individual was sampled airtemp_celsius - Ambient air temperature in degrees celsius at the date and time when the individual was sampled behavioral_rating - The degree of amphibious activity exhibited by the individual. Values range from 0 (aquatic) to 4 (highly terrestrial). Scores are comparable to those listed in the ’species_ratings’ file, and are defined in Table S2 of the supplementary information associated with the paper. **DATA COLLECTOR** All data was collected and compiled by Terry J. Ord (t.ord@unsw.edu.au) and Georgina Cooke, unless otherwise stated in the paper or its associated supplementary information.
