"MPB_map_2003.tif": A raster (TIFF) dataset showing areas infested/not infested by mountain pine beetle (MPB) based on change detection over the 2002-2003 interval. 2. "MPB_map_2005.tif": A raster (TIFF) dataset showing areas infested/not infested by mountain pine beetle based on change detection over the 2003-2005 interval. 3. "MPB_map_2006.tif": A raster (TIFF) dataset showing areas infested/not infested by mountain pine beetle based on change detection over the 2005-2006 interval. 4. "MPB_map_2009.tif": A raster (TIFF) dataset showing areas infested/not infested by mountain pine beetle based on change detection over the 2006-2009 interval. 5. "MPB_map_2010.tif": A raster (TIFF) dataset showing areas infested/not infested by mountain pine beetle based on change detection over the 2009-2010 interval. 6. "point_data.csv": a spreadsheet dataset combining data on MPB infestation (derived from the maps above), elevation, topography, and spatial relationships, for 2000 points. Files 1-5 (Infestation Maps): These files are identical in their format and methods of preparation, with the exception that they represent different time periods. They were developed from Landsat5 (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010) or a combination of Landsat5 and Landsat7 (pre-scan line corrector failure) imagery (2003) (path 32 row 34). All images were atmospherically corrected and converted to reflectance. Cloud cover was manually removed, with areas obscured by cloud cover in one year removed from all images. The study area was masked to include only forested areas in Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. The images were classified using a supervised maximum-likelihood algorithm in ENVI v.4.8 with training classes selected based on initial NDVI and change in NDMI between images. The training classes were hand selected so that Red Attack was represented by pixels having high initial NDVI and declining NDMI between image pairs. The classification was validated by comparison with high-resolution orthoimagery. In each file, 2 represents the binary class "Red Attack," and 1 represents "Non-Red Attack." All files use the UTM Zone 13N projection based on the WGS 1984 geographic coordinate system. File 6 (Point Data Spreasheet): Spreadsheet data containing data on infestation status (from outbreak maps) forest composition and structure, topography, and outbreak spatial relationships for 2000 randomly-generated points. These data were used to create conditional inference tree models analyzing how predictors of MPB spread change during outbreak cycles. Column headings are defined as follows: SzClass: The dominant size class of trees in the stand where the point is located Elev: Elevation (US feet) Aspect: Aspect, binned into 8 classes (NO, NE, EA, SE, SO, SW, WE, NW) TreeCov: The percent of cover by trees in the stand where the point is located PicoPct: Percent cover by Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) PipoPct: Percent cover by Pinus ponderosae (ponderosa pine) Hect03: The area of the nearest MPB infestation in 2003 (hectares) Hect05: The area of the nearest MPB infestation in 2005 (hectares) Hect06: The area of the nearest MPB infestation in 2006 (hectares) Hect09: The area of the nearest MPB infestation in 2009 (hectares) Hect10: The area of the nearest MPB infestation in 2010 (hectares) RA03: Infestation code (RA = Red Attack, NRA = Non-Red Attack) for 2003 RA05: Infestation code (RA = Red Attack, NRA = Non-Red Attack) for 2005 RA06: Infestation code (RA = Red Attack, NRA = Non-Red Attack) for 2006 RA09: Infestation code (RA = Red Attack, NRA = Non-Red Attack) for 2009 RA10: Infestation code (RA = Red Attack, NRA = Non-Red Attack) for 2010 Dist03: Distance to nearest MPB infestation in 2003 (meters) Dist05: Distance to nearest MPB infestation in 2005 (meters) Dist06: Distance to nearest MPB infestation in 2006 (meters) Dist09: Distance to nearest MPB infestation in 2009 (meters) Dist10: Distance to nearest MPB infestation in 2010 (meters) Forest composition, forest structure, and topographic variables were obtained from the R2Veg Database . Spatial (Area and Distance) variables were computed based on the outbreak maps in ArcGIS version 10.0.
