READ ME file associated with the data in McGhee & Bell ÒPaternal care, epigenetics and fitness enhancing effects on offspring anxietyÓ There are 3 data files total associated with this paper, each with their own READ_ME file: 1. McGhee&Bell_data1_offspring_behavior_dnmt3a.xlsx 2. McGhee&Bell_data2_father_averages.xlsx 3. McGhee&Bell_data3_survival_controltrt.xlsx Data file 3: McGhee&Bell_data3_survival_controltrt.xlsx This is data on each individual stickleback and each predator-prey interaction from the predation experiment. Note that data from this experiment were also used in McGhee et al. 2013 (stickleback alone freezing behavior and predator-prey interaction for control maternal treatment stickleback only) and McGhee et al. 2012 (predator-prey interaction for both control and predator-exposed stickleback maternal treatments) Column heading = information 1. expt_day = Day that the predator-prey assay was conducted (numbered in order so if a number is missing, no trials were run that day) 2. stickle_ID = unique number for each individual F1 stickleback (N=77) 3. dam_ID = identity of a stickleback's mother (i.e., family identity) 4. maternal_trt = control (i.e., mothers were NOT predator-exposed) 5. stickle_SL = standard length (mm) of the stickleback 6. A_before_flask_after_peckN = number of pecks the stickleback directed at the side walls after removal of the blind for 3 minutes (before), while a novel glass flask was present for 3 minutes (flask) and after a shoal of 3 conspecific juveniles in a glass flask was removed for 3 minutes (after) in part A 7. B_before_pike_after_peckN = number of pecks the stickleback directed at the side walls after removal of the blind for 3 minutes (before), while a model of a Northern pike was present for 3 minutes (pike) and after the model pike was removed for 3 minutes (after) in part B (2 hours after part A) 8. A+B_peckN = sum of all pecks directed at the wall during the 3 stimuli of part A and the 3 stimuli in part B 9. A+B_show_pecks_yn = whether or not the stickleback showed any pecks at the wall during the 6 stimuli in parts A and B (yes = 1, no = 0) 10. Pike_ID = unique number for each individual northern pike (N = 12) 11. Pike_time_to_capture1sec = How long it took the pike to successfully capture the stickleback (i.e., stickleback survival time) in seconds 12. Pike_time_to_orient1sec = How long it took the pike to first orient towards the stickleback (seconds) 13. Pike_time_to_lunge1sec = How long it took the pike to launch their first attack and lunge at the stickleback (seconds)
