"This file explains all of the variables in each of the datasets that accompany: Lietzenmayer LB, Clark DL, Taylor LA 2019ms. " dataset: 2019_Maevia_color_choice.csv ID - special identifying number for each individual spider Sex - male/female Morph - only for male spiders, tufted or striped morphs Color Attacked - the colored cape of the termite attacked by the spider (grey, yellow, or striped) Orients to Yellow - counts, number of times a spider oriented to yellow caped termites Orients to BW - counts, number of times a spider oriented to striped caped termites Orients to Grey - counts, number of times a spider oriented to grey caped termites Number of Trials - total number a trials a spider participated in before attacking a termite or reaching 3 trial limit Exit Vial (sec) - time in seconds when spider completely left small center petridish in arena Color of first orient - cape color of the termite the spider first oriented to after exiting vial Time to attack (sec) - time in seconds when the spider attacked and captured a termite Julian Date - date when trial was recorded Days since last feeding - number of days between spider feeding on cricket and participating in trial dataset: 2019_raw2017fielddata_tuftmeasurments ID - special identifying number for each individual spider Location - name of park/trial where collected Julian Date - julian date for the day on which a spider was collected Sex - male/female Morph - striped/tufted, only valid for males Maturity - mature/juvenile status at time of collection CarapaceWidth - carapace width in photoshop units divided by (5/length of 5 squares), gives carapace width in mm Area of abdomen (mm^2) - Abdomen area (photoshop) divided by area of 4 squares, multiplied by 4, gives the abdomen area in square mm Left Tuft (mm) - length of left tuft in mm, converted from photoshop pixels Right Tuft (mm) - length of right tuft in mm, converted from photoshop pixels Absolute value tuft symmetry (mm) - absolute value of Tuft Symmetry (right - left tuft), converted from photoshop pixel units Average tuft length (mm) - average of all three tuft lengths, converted from photoshop pixels to mm Relative tuft length (mm) - proportion of average tuft length (mm) to carapace width (mm) Condition (Residuals) - calculated by taking residuals of correlation between CarapaceWidth (mm) and area of abdomen (mm^2) dataset: 2019_rawspectralmeasurements wavelength - light wavelength where the reflectance measurement was taken. Runs from 280-700nm yellow paper 1 to 30 - replicates for reflectance measurements taken of yellow paper attached to termites as capes. Ten pieces of paper, each measured 3 times pedipalp 1 to 30 - replicates for relfectance measurements taken of striped male pedipalps from specimens. Ten individual pedipalps, each measured 3 times grey paper 1 to 30 - replicates for reflectance measurements taken of grey paper attached to termites as capes. Ten pieces of paper, each measured 3 times
