Abstract
The dataset includes information volunteered by people who participated in a survey about their perceptions of and experiences in a specific park. The data was collected following an IRB-approved protocol. The dataset features coded responses to closed- and open-ended survey questions as well as the original written responses to open-ended questions. The dataset is formatted as a SPSS file, which includes a codebook for the numeric values of coded responses. The data includes individual responses to questions about demographic features and social identity, however it does not contain information that identifies specific individuals.

Description of the data and file structure
Data were collected from people visiting one of five parks in Ramsey County, Minnesota, to inventory their opinions and perceptions about the park and new signage that was installed in the park. The dataset comprises responses to a 15-question survey using an in-person intercept method administered to visitors of five parks during May, June, July, and August of 2023. The survey questions explore park visitors’ perceptions of the specific park where they were intercepted, their feelings of belonging in the park, and their first impressions of the public art pieces installed on the signage, and how the artwork influenced their sense of belonging. Some questions inventory people's reasons for visiting the park as well as how often they visit. Several questions asked for demographic information; however, no data were collected that would enable linking responses to specific individuals. The project was approved by an Institutional Review Board. An English-language copy of the survey, entitled survey_supplement.pdf, is included for reference.
The dataset is formatted for the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. The file includes a codebook included metadata that describes how numeric values should be interpreted. Several fields in the dataset are efforts to recode variables for analytical purposes. Information in several fields has been suppressed to protect individual privacy.
The file should be used with SPSS and may not be compatible with other software programs, especially the codebook.
Files and variables
File: Survey_supplement.pdf
Description: original survey used to collect the responses in the dataset.
File: Signs_of_Belonging_Survey_database_revised.sav
Description: dataset of survey responses as well as recoded responses for analysis.
Note: Free-response fields were replaced to mitigate the possibility of identification of survey takers.
Code/software
SPSS version 31. Can also be opened in pspp.
Human subjects data
The dataset does not include identifying information. Data were collected following informed consent protocols, which included consent to share collected data with researchers and disseminating findings with the broader public.
