Abstract
This dataset contains camera-trap records and analysis code associated with the manuscript “Faunivores are active longer than herbivores across the daily cycle in a neotropical savanna–forest mammal community.” The data were collected in Hato Piñero, Cojedes state, Venezuelan Llanos, Venezuela, between June 2013 and December 2015. The archive includes the main dataset used to estimate daily activity duration, diel activity patterns, and temporal overlap among 12 mammal species, together with the R script used to reproduce the main analyses, tables, and figures reported in the study. Repeated timestamps may occur when more than one individual of the same species was visible in the same photograph or event; in such cases, each individual was counted as a separate record.

Description of the data and file structure
This archive contains camera-trap records and analysis code used in the study of daily activity duration, diel activity patterns, and temporal overlap in a 12-species mammal community from Hato Piñero, Venezuela.
Each row in the data file corresponds to an individual record used in the activity analyses. Repeated timestamps may occur when more than one individual of the same species was visible in the same photograph or event; in such cases, each individual was counted as a separate record.
Files and variables
Files included:
-
Hato_Pinero_mammal_camera_trap_activity_data.csv
Main camera-trap dataset used in the analyses.
-
Mammal_activity_analysis_Dryad.R
R script used to reproduce the main analyses, tables, and figures.
Column descriptions for Hato_Pinero_mammal_camera_trap_activity_data.csv:
- Camera ID = identifier of the camera station
- Place_Name = local name of the camera location
- File_ID = image identifier
- Recording_Date = date of the animal record
- Recording_Time = time of the animal record
- Hour_24 = time expressed as a fraction of the 24-hour cycle
- Radians = time converted to radians for circular activity analyses
- Species = species name in the original dataset
- Trophic_Group = trophic guild (F = faunivore, H = herbivore)
Date format:
Dates are formatted as DD.MM.YYYY.
Species included in the final manuscript analyses:
- jaguar
- puma
- cunaguaro
- zorro
- oso hormiguero
- venado
- baquiro cachete blanco
- danta
- conejo
- chiguire
- picure
- mono capuchino
Notes on species names:
Species names in the data file are retained as they appeared in the original dataset. In the R script, these names are mapped to abbreviated scientific names used in the manuscript analyses.
Notes on data structure:
- Repeated rows with the same timestamp may represent multiple individuals of the same species recorded in the same image or event.
- Species with fewer than 100 records were excluded from the final manuscript analyses.
- Wet season was defined as June–November.
- Dry season was defined as December–May.
Code/software
Software requirements:
The R script was run in R version 4.5.1 and requires the following packages:
- activity
- overlap
- ggplot2
- parallel
- dplyr
Notes on the R script:
- The script expects the data file Hato_Pinero_mammal_camera_trap_activity_data.csv to be in the same working directory.
- Some column names are standardized internally in the script for analysis convenience (for example, Hour_24 is renamed internally to Hour24).
- The script writes formatted tables, model summaries, and main/supplementary figures to the working directory.
