Abstract
Morphological matrix of 39 Cicadellidae species and 5 outgroups based on 42 internal anatomical characters. Of these, 18 are binary (e.g., Character 1: Principal gland divided into anterior and posterior lobes: 0=No, 1=Yes) characters and 24 are polymorphic (e.g., Character 0: Shape of principal gland lobules: 0=Tubular, 1=Acinar, 2=Digitate) characters. All polymorphic characters were treated as unordered in the analysis.

Description of the data and file structure
Specimens of the 44 taxa examined were collected by sweep-netting and light trapping in Shaanxi, Guangxi, Hainan, and Yunnan, China. Live insects were anaesthetized by brief freezing at −80 °C (~30 s) or, for frozen material, thawed and immersed in physiological saline. For each species, at least three males and three females were dissected. Forty-two discrete characters were scored in the salivary glands, digestive tract and Malpighian tubules, and male and female reproductive systems.

Description: The morphological character matrix was compiled in Mesquite v.3.81.
File: seven9.trees.tre
Description: the 3 most-parsimonious trees (TL=320; CI=0.228; RI=0.506) from implied weighting analysis (k=9) of 42 discrete internal anatomical characters. (analysed in TNT v.1.5 (Goloboff & Catalano, 2016) using the one-step script guoyi.run)
File: seven9.original.tre
Description: the strict consensus tree file from implied weighting analysis (k=9) of 42 characters.
File: nine.winclada.ss
Description: the phylogenetic hypothesis for the Cicadellidae and associated character state changes from implied weighting analysis.
File: seven.original.tre
Description: the strict consensus tree file from the equal-weight analysis of 42 characters.
Code/software
The data files (including the matrix and tree files) are in plain text formats that can be opened with any basic text editor. To view and analyze the phylogenetic trees (e.g., seven.original.tre), we recommend using FigTree (version 1.4.4 or later) or TreeView. The character matrix was assembled and managed using Mesquite (version 3.70) or Notepad. The analyses were performed using TNT (version 1.5) and the one-step script guoyi.run. The included .tre files can also be directly opened with TNT to explore character optimizations. The included .ss file can be opened with Winclada.
