Abstract
In a survey of health care providers in Washington State, the vast majority reported encountering cannabis-related adverse events (AEs) and associated problems in their clinical practice. The questionnaire included the following topics: professional profile (type of health care profession, specialty, setting, years in clinical work, county of professional practice), estimated frequency of overall cannabis AEs cases treated/seen (as individual, as a team), AEs ratings of seriousness and frequency; level of concern with cannabis-related physical and mental health AEs, practices and procedures (screening and treatment), perceived facilitators and barriers to identifying and intervening with cannabis AEs, interest and motivation to learn and do more on the topic, and knowledge/awareness of cannabis’s medicinal benefits and risks of adverse events.

Human subjects data
The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Washington determined that this research involved no greater than minimal risk and met the criteria for exempt status. Survey responses reflect clinical experience and practice and beliefs and knowledge about cannabis use, risks, and adverse events. To reduce the risk of potential identification of any single respondent, we are leaving demographic questions out of the data repository.
Pertinent questions from available questionnaires from relevant prior studies were discussed by the authors, and a select few were included in their original form or adapted. Most questions were created by the research team through a consensus process and accepted at face validity. The questionnaire underwent two rounds of iterative review by clinicians who fit the eventual eligibility criteria.
Recruitment was primarily performed through professional organizations’ online channels. Each organization was contacted up to 4 times by email or website contact forms with a request to disseminate the study and a survey link through paid or free advertisement via newsletters, website banners, or e-mail lists (Listservs). Some local or setting-specific organizations in WA were also identified and contacted, as well as sharing through the authors’ professional contacts.
Potential participants clicked on the study link displayed in the messages/ads and were directed to a web page with a Participant Information Statement containing a short explanation of the study. If they chose to proceed with the survey, they were directed to the eligibility screening. If eligible, they were immediately directed to the online questionnaire. Only actively submitted responses (i.e., participant clicked the ‘‘submit’’ button) were considered valid. After submission, the participant had the option to be compensated for their participation ($35 Tango Reward Link).
The online survey was programmed into the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) system (Harris et al. 2009, 2019) hosted at The Institute for Translational Health at the University of Washington. REDCap is a secure, web-based application designed to support data capture for research studies. Data collection occurred from December 2024 to the end of March 2025.
