Abstract
The modelling dataset presented here corresponds to the manuscript entitled "The influence of glacial Northern Hemisphere ice sheets on atmospheric circulation". The Laurentide ice sheet affected the North Atlantic Ocean during the last glacial period, but its impact on the global atmospheric circulation remains unclear. Here, we use the Australian Earth System Model to investigate the relative roles of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (65 000–25 000 years ago; 65–25 ka) boundary conditions in shaping global climate ∼49 ka, a period marked by prominent millennial-scale variability.

The data files pi_annual_mean.nc and 49ka-full_annual_mean.nc contain annual mean values for experiments 49ka-full and PI.
The data file pi_djf_mean.nc (pi_jja_mean.nc), 49ka-co_djf_mean.nc (49ka-co_jja_mean.nc), 49ka-alb_djf_mean.nc (49ka-alb_jja_mean.nc)
and 49ka-full_djf_mean.nc (49ka-full_jja_mean.nc) contain DJF (JJA) seasonal mean values, respectively.
Description of the data and file structure
The data files are in NetCDF format. Below is the description for all the variables. The units are provided in brackets.
- ua and fld_s30i201: surface zonal wind (m/s)
- va and fld_s30i202: surface meridional wind (m/s)
- tas: surface air temperature (K)
- pr: precipitation (kg m-2 s-1)
- zg: geopotential height (m)
- sst: sea surface temperature (°C)
- mld: mixed layer depth (m)
- fld_s01i207: incoming shortwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere (W/m2)
- These variables are provided for the different experiments: PI, 49ka-co, 49ka-alb, and 49ka-full, as described in the manuscript.
Code/Software
All the final data is in .nc or netCDF format, which can be opened and read by free/open software applications such as Panoply, HDFview, ferret, NCO (ncview), and Python.
Sharing/Access information
Data were derived from the model outputs of simulations present at the National Computational Infrastructure. The model code is available at https://access-hive.org.au/models/run-a-model/run-access-esm/#prerequisites
This data is generated by performing numerical simulations with the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator Earth System Model Version 1.5 climate model. It was processed using software such as the National Climate Operator (NCO), Climate Data Operator (CDO), and Ferret to generate monthly means of simulations used in this study.
