Abstract
This dataset provides census tract-level geospatial data developed to support transportation innovation analysis, accessibility assessment, and equity-focused planning. The dataset integrates publicly available housing, employment, transportation, and sociodemographic indicators from multiple sources into a unified spatial database. Variables include population and employment counts, demographic characteristics, household and income measures, housing attributes, transportation accessibility indicators, and other community-level metrics relevant to mobility and transportation planning. Data are organized as tabular records linked to census tracts, enabling spatial analysis and integration with geographic information systems (GIS).
The dataset was developed to support research conducted for the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation at the University of Michigan, including the project “Addressing Spatial Mismatch in Labor and Transportation Access with Connected Automated Shuttles to Meet the Needs of Low-Income Populations.” Potential applications include transportation planning, accessibility analysis, equity assessment, workforce access studies, automated mobility research, and policy evaluation. Because all information is derived from publicly available, aggregated data sources, the dataset contains no individual-level records or personally identifiable information and may be reused for research, planning, and educational purposes.
Spatial Accessibility Dataset – Chicago Metropolitan Area
Description of data and files
Files Included
- df_public.csv: Public-use, census-tract–level dataset for the Chicago Metropolitan Area. This CSV contains integrated housing, employment, transportation, socio-demographic, and accessibility variables derived from ACS, LEHD LODES, GTFS, OpenStreetMap, and Chicago Health Atlas sources. Each record corresponds to a census tract and is indexed by an 11-digit GEOID.
File Format
- CSV (.csv): Provided in this repository.
- GeoPackage (.gpkg), Shapefile (.shp), GeoJSON: Used in preprocessing workflows but not included in this public release.
Contents
Geospatial Layers
- Census Tract Boundaries: U.S. Census TIGER/Line shapefiles
- Coordinate Reference System: EPSG:4326 (WGS84)
Integrated Variables
- Housing: Housing unit counts, occupancy status, housing density, rent burden, housing condition
- Employment: Job density, employment by sector
- Transportation: Transit stop locations, service frequency, CTA rail lines, road network connectivity
- Socio-Demographics: Population, income, age distribution, vehicle ownership, race/ethnicity composition, commuting behavior
- Resource Accessibility: Reliable internet access, low food access
Key Features
- Granularity: Census-tract level for fine-grained spatial analysis
- Integration: Combines housing, employment, transportation, and demographic indicators into a single dataset
- Multidimensional Clustering: Identifies neighborhoods where housing, employment, and transportation barriers converge
Use Cases
- Identify transportation access gaps
- Analyze mobility access differences across neighborhoods
- Support scenario planning for new transit services or infrastructure investments
Applications
- Transportation Innovation Analysis: Evaluate how emerging mobility solutions (e.g., microtransit, shared mobility) interact with existing infrastructure and demographics
- Accessibility Assessment: Quantify different levels in access to jobs, healthcare, and essential services
- Policy and Planning: Inform data-driven decisions for infrastructure investment, transit expansion, and climate resilience strategies
Data Sources
- IPUMS NHGIS: ACS 5-Year Estimates (2014–2018 and 2019–2023) for sociodemographic and housing data
- Chicago Health Atlas: Indicators on housing condition, food access, and internet availability
- Chicago Data Portal: Affordable housing locations, CTA rail line shapefiles
- LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES)
- GTFS Feeds: Transit service data
- OpenStreetMap (OSM): Road network and points of interest
Spatial Integration Methodology
- Conducted using ArcGIS Pro
- Health Atlas census tracts used to spatially filter all datasets
- Tract-level data joined using 11-digit GEOID
- Affordable housing coordinates overlaid and assigned to tracts
- Selective use of Health Atlas indicators based on completeness and alignment with other variables
File Formats
- GeoPackage (.gpkg) – Recommended for GIS workflows
- CSV + Shapefile (.shp) – For compatibility with legacy systems
- GeoJSON – For web-based visualization and analysis

Human subjects data
This dataset does not contain individual-level human-subject data. The data are derived exclusively from publicly available, aggregated American Community Survey (ACS) estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau. No survey respondent records, personally identifiable information (PII), protected information, or individual-level observations are included in the deposited files.
Because the dataset consists solely of publicly available aggregated statistics and does not contain participant-level data, explicit participant consent for public data release was not required by the authors, and no additional de-identification procedures were necessary. All source data were obtained from publicly available ACS products that are disseminated by the U.S. Census Bureau in a manner designed to protect respondent confidentiality.
