Abstract
This dataset contains spectral and temporal parameter values of signals from beet leafhoppers (Neoaliturus tenellus) produced when probing, non-probing, and during specific probing behaviors on beet (Beta vulgaris) plants. This dataset also contains spectral and temporal parameter values of signals from beet leafhoppers wired for EPG and from leafhoppers not wired for EPG. Lastly, this dataset contains the mean duration of probing behaviors of beet leafhoppers were engaged in during 6-hour recordings.

Description of the data and file structure
Files and variables
MS1a.probing.dataframe.csv
This csv file contains mean values of vibrational signal parameters from 15 male leafhoppers while probing and not probing. Below is a key for interpretation of columns, with units in parentheses where applicable:
- sample.ID: unique identifier of individual leafhopper
- plant.ID: unique identifier of individual beet plant
- probing: whether leafhopper was ‘probing’ or ‘non-probing’
- Signal.Type: vibrational signal type; i.e., MS1 A represents ‘male signal type 1a
- mean.peak.freq: mean value of signal dominant, i.e., peak, frequency (Hz)
- mean.duration: mean value of signal duration (s)
- mean.peak.power.density: mean value of signal peak power density (dB FS/Hz)
- mean.filtered.RMS.amplitude: mean value of signal root mean square amplitude in the frequency range of 260 – 5000 Hz (dimensionless sample units)
- mean.repetition.time: mean value of the time from the beginning of one signal to the beginning of the next signal within a signaling bout (s)
- mean.signals.per.bout: mean number of signals produced during a signaling bout
- n.calls: total number of signals
MS1a.behavior.dataframe.csv
This csv file contains mean values of vibrational signal parameters from 15 male leafhoppers while engaged in each different probing behavior. Column interpretation is the same as for MS1a.probing.dataframe.csv except column:
- behavior: represents the specific probing behavior of a leafhopper
MS1a.noEPG.EPG.csv
This csv file contains mean values of vibrational signals from 15 male leafhoppers wired for electropenetrography (EPG) and 10 male leafhoppers not wired for EPG (i.e., free moving). Values for free moving leafhoppers represent mean values of all signals produced during one hour after production of the first signal. Column interpretation is the same as for MS1a.probing.dataframe.csv except column:
- EPG: ‘yes’ represents a leafhopper wired for EPG, and ‘no’ represents a free moving leafhopper
EPG.data.csv
This csv file represents the mean duration of probing behaviors and mean number of vibrational signals produced during 6-hour recordings of 15 male beet leafhoppers. Below is a key for interpretation of columns:
-
hour: indicates the hour of the recording
-
behavior: indicates the specific probing behavior
-
mean.probing.duration: mean duration (s) that leafhoppers were engaged in a specific probing behavior during an hour of the recording
-
mean.calls: mean number of male signal type 1a leafhoppers produced while engaged in a specific probing behavior during an hour of the recording
Specific information on recording methodology can be found in the associated manuscript: Pitt et al. (2026).
